Toshiba Opens up on HD DVD

Toshiba Opens up on HD DVD

Following leaks predicting the demise of HD DVD, Wal-Mart’s announcement to stop carrying the format, and news reports from the Japanese press declaring the format war over, Toshiba finally commented publicly about its ailing technology on Monday morning. The official word: HD DVD is up for review, but still not dead.

Company representatives said that Toshiba has not officially declared a stance to kill HD DVD, but acknowledged that it’s up on the block. “The media has reported that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business. Toshiba has not made any announcement concerning this,” the company said, according to vnunet.com. “Although Toshiba is currently assessing its business strategies, no decision has been made at this moment.”

One anonymous source told the Associated Press that HD DVD’s fate would be decided at an upcoming board meeting, possibly as soon as Tuesday. Meanwhile, the stock market has not waited for an official word to start moving, as Toshiba stock on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 5.7 percent on Monday.

The Cleer Arc 3 might be the most advanced open-ear earbuds so far
Cleer Audio Arc 3.

Cleer Audio appears to have pulled out all the stops for its latest open-ear earbuds, the Cleer Arc 3. In addition to the features that were introduced on the Cleer Arc II Sport, like a charging case with its own battery, antibacterial UV lighting, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound, the Arc 3 add better water protection, voice control, and spatial audio with Dolby-powered head tracking. And the charging case now sports its own color touchscreen. The Cleer Arc 3 are available in black and pink color choices for $220 on amazon.com starting October 24. Cleer says additional colors are coming soon.

Design-wise, the Cleer Arc 3 use the same articulated, spring-loaded earhook as previous generations, and I've found that it offers a comfortable, yet secure fit. Cleer says the earbuds are now rated IPX7, making them effectively waterproof, even if fully submerged in water.

Fubo shakes up subscriptions with free and premium options
The Fubo app is displayed on a Roku device.

Fubo — as part of what it's calling a "Super Aggregation strategy" — today announced that you can now subscribe to other premium subscription services through Fubo, without having a subscription to Fubo itself. Yeah, it's a little odd.

Here's the gist: "Premium" options (which really just means "for a separate fee") such as FanDuel Sports Network, NBA League Pass, and Paramount+ With Showtime have traditionally been available as add-ons to a Fubo subscription. New is that you can sign up for them through Fubo, which also will tack on Fubo Free. That last bit is Fubo's take on the free ad-supported television movement, which has more than 170 channels and on-demand content. The twist is that Fubo Free had previously only been available to former Fubo subscribers, as a way to potentially get them back on a paying track.
