Science, not civets: You can now buy fermented coffee that’s poop-free

You’ve probably heard of kopi luwak, the outrageously expensive coffee that’s made from coffee beans that have journeyed through the digestive system of civets, a cat-like critter found in Indonesia. The civets’ tracts supposedly makes the resulting coffee smoother and was prized by Dutch colonialists who discovered the brew through plantation workers who cleaned seeds that were found in civet poo, because they were forbidden from picking coffee fruits for their own cups of coffee, according to Time.

But the kopi luwak you can buy nowadays likely comes from caged animals and often isn’t the real deal at all. But if all you really want is a smoother cup of coffee, you can always turn to science. Camille Delebecque has a Ph.D. in microbiology and Sophie Deterre got her Ph.D. in food science and technology. Together, the founded Afineur, a company which aims to make the perfect cup of coffee putting beans through a fermentation process. It’s not exactly what happens in civets’ guts, but it does beat having to pick through their droppings.

The company’s Cultured Coffee goes through a fermentation process, thanks to microorganisms, while the beans are still green. They’re then roasted, and the resulting beans result in a less bitter, uniquely flavored cup of coffee. You can use any process you want to make your coffee, from pour-over to Keuring, according to its creators, and the brew will turn out equally delicious.

The pair turned to Kickstarter to launch the beans, and it’s already more than doubled its goal of $15,000. You can get a five-ounce pack for $29. Pricey, yes, but the version of kopi luwak you can find on Amazon starts at $45 for four ounces. If all goes according to plan, you’ll be brewing your un-bitter, civet-less Joe in December.

You can now download the first Android 12L Beta on your Google Pixel
Android 12L shown for a larger display.

Google announced on Wednesday the first beta release of Android 12L, the next feature drop for the recently released Android 12 operating system. Aimed primarily at tablets and larger-screened devices, Android 12L will focus on changing the Android experience from the much-critiqued blown-up-phone look to a discrete experience that takes the larger canvas of tablets into account.
What's new?
Today's beta release includes the refreshed interface for larger screens, including a column view for the notification shade and lock screen. A new multitasking dock is being introduced to allow faster access to split-screen and drag-and-drop, and Google's now done work to allow every Android 12 app to work with split-screen mode regardless of whether developers have built for it.

The big problem with big-screen Android
Unlike iOS, the Android experience on tablets and larger-screened devices has been abysmal. It's a little understandable when one considers that Google shifted its tablet focus from Android to Chrome OS a few years ago. While Chrome OS currently has a decent tablet experience, one that the current Android 12L seems to want to replicate when looking at the dock and split-screen multitasking, the app experience for both has remained lacking.

You can now install any Android app on Windows 11 with a single click
Android App running on a Windows 11 PC

Android apps arrived on Windows 11 not too long ago, but there's still one big issue: Windows only supports the Amazon Android app store, which has less than a fourth of the apps that can be found on Google Play. But there's a solution in the form of WSATools, a utility from engineering student Simone Franco that not only allows you to install any Android app, but also makes the process much easier.

Around the time of the announcement of Windows 11, we received confirmation that users would be able to sideload, or unofficially install, any Android app on Windows 11. The problem is that the process is tedious. It requires multiple downloads from separate sources, a lot of tweaking, and some time in the command line.

You can now move WhatsApp messages between Apple’s iPhones and Google’s Pixels
Google Pixel 6 Pro in Sorta Sunny color.

Switching between iPhones and Android phones has never been easier, with both operating systems offering tools to move your apps and as much data as you can between devices. Now, Google just made the switch even more painless as it now lets you transfer WhatsApp chats between iPhones and Pixels with a new update.

Despite SMS and iMessage's popularity in the U.S., WhatsApp remains a widely used messaging app in every other country. While the service makes moving to new phones in the same ecosystem seamless, it's often been impossible to switch between devices running on different operating systems. A switch between an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 13 might work fine, but trying to move your WhatsApp account to a Pixel 6 would mean leaving all your messages behind.
