It’s pretty much standard operating procedure for smart home gadgets to be released along with some sort of mobile app that lets you control them. The idea is that, since they’re generally small, portable, and always nearby, they’re usually the easiest way to control your appliances. Generally speaking, that’s correct. However, sometimes nothing is trustier or more convenient than controlling everything from your computer – especially when you’re already using it.

Take the Google Chromecast for example. The convenience of being able to send videos from your tablet or smartphones straight to your TV is great, but searching for videos on a laptop is still easier when you can type faster, search better, and sort through the results more efficiently. So wouldn’t you want to do the same with other app-enabled smart home devices, like the Netatmo Weather Station?

Created by developer Charles Aroutiounian (who also happens to be the creator of Hue Menu, a Mac utility for controlling Philips Hue bulbs from your computer) AtmoBar basically ports all the functionalities of the original Netatmo app onto your Mac’s screen so you can access the settings right from your desktop. Once installed, the app adds an icon to the Menu bar that, if clicked, will open up a drop-down selection of weather stations connected to your network. From here you can access graphs and information on things like outdoor/indoor temperature, humidity, altitude, indoor CO2 levels, indoor barometric pressure, and sound level – all in real time

Arotiounian’s AtmoBar app will set you back $2.99. As far as Mac apps go, that’s relatively cheap, but you also don’t get a whole lot of extra functionality for your money. It’s more about convenience than anything, and if you spend a lot of time on your computer while you’re at home, it very well may be worth it.

Regardless, we hope that Aroutounian continues to build these kinds of desktop control utilities for smart home devices and broaden the range of control options consumers have for them. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for one that allows you to control a Nest thermostat.

Tesla Powerwall is the best solar, home backup, and EV charging companion
Tesla Powerwall 3 installed on outside of home

Solar power, and having solar panels on your home, is a fantastic way to conserve energy and cut down on power bills, especially if you live somewhere sunny like Florida or California. There's just one glaring issue. When the grid goes down you still lose power because of how it's connected. Your solar panels cannot generate enough energy or keep it stored to keep your power on. So, essentially, your power setup doesn't offer much benefit there, unless you get a home power backup system. More specifically, something like a Tesla Powerwall is a compact home battery that stores energy generated from the grid. That energy is then used as a backup when traditional grid power is unavailable.

To make it even more clear, with a Tesla Powerwall, the power stays on even during a major blackout or outage. It's whole-home backup, too, which means you can power your lights, appliances, electronics, you name it. If you've ever had to throw away an entire refrigerator's worth of spoiled food because of a multi-day outage -- like I have -- you'll certainly appreciate the option to keep your appliances running. But that's not all it can do. The Tesla Powerwall is an excellent companion for Tesla EV owners, creating an entire smart ecosystem of power. Let's explore.

Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Security Camera -- $27 $50 45% off

While this is ostensibly made for your garage, there's no reason the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage can't work for other uses as well, especially if you don't need the highest quality of recording. It has an HD camera, which isn't a ton, but it does have an impressive 130-degree field of view. The MyQ also connects through dual-band Wi-Fi for a better connection, and it even has two-way communication, which is impressive for something at this price bracket.
