Dell To Re-Enter PMP Market?

Dell To Re-Enter PMP Market?

Hey, anyone remember the DJ Ditty, Dell’s ill-received (and ill-named) entry in the personal media player market from way back in 2003? Dell may have given the Ditty an unceremonious burial in 2006, but now news reports in The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Reuters, and elsewhere have the computer maker contemplating getting back into competition with Apple’s iPod with a new line of portable media devices.

Leveraging the company’s somewhat unexpected acquisition of Zingnearly a year ago, Dell’s players will reportedly sport prices less than $100 and offer Wi-Fi connectivity. However, the company seems to be considering a tactic other than launching a PlaysForSure device—because, obviously, that hasn’t really helped anyone compete with Apple’s iPod juggernaut. Instead, the company plans to support the device with media software that enables users to organize and download music and movies from a variety of online sources, and transfer that content seamlessly to the portable device.

Given the reception granted Dell’s previous foray into the PMP market, it’s possible that Dell may just be floating the idea of re-entering the market as a trial balloon: reports indicate the company has not made any final decision about whether to launch the new player. If Dell were to launch a new player, it’s hard to see what a low-cost, Wi-Fi enabled player would bring to the market that hasn’t already been tried by other players…although, for the most part, they have not had Dell’s name recognition, marketing muscle, and (newly established) retail presence. (Except, maybe, for that one company that does those non-iPod, Wi-Fi-toting players with their own DRM scheme…who was that? Oh, right. Microsoft.)

Eufy Clean G32 Pro -- $119, was $299

Keeping costs down yet efficiency high, the Eufy Clean G32 Pro has all the key features you could need. It offers smart dynamic navigation so it's clever enough to clean across all floors efficiently rather than wandering around your home aimlessly. Combined with its 2,000Pa of suction power, it's also fantastic at removing pet hair, food crumbs, dirt, and any other debris you may need to clear. BoostIQ technology means it automatically increases suction power any time it switches from hard to carpeted floors, too, so you always get the best clean. Other features like great app support, drop-sensing technology, and an anti-collision sensor mean it stays safe at all times. Nice and low maintenance, it's sure to save you plenty of time needing to vacuum manually. And it's surprisingly quiet, working out about as loud as the average microwave oven.

How to automatically light up a room when you enter
Woman having glass of wine with Govee Smart LED light bulb on.

Smart lights are a wonderful addition to the home. Besides having loads of settings for cool colors and animations, they can also save power with intelligent scheduling and presence awareness. With a little bit of elbow grease, your lights only need to stay on as long as necessary and can turn on the second you come into the room.

The nice thing about building an automation like this is that it's very straightforward and can work with a variety of devices. Sure, you might have some Nanoleaf Shapes that you want to automate, but if you have some remote bulbs that are harder to upgrade, you can often achieve the same results by swapping in a smart light switch. Sensors are equally flexible. You can have a Hue Outdoor Sensor that sees you pulling up in the driveway or a Switchbot Contact Sensor keeping tabs on your front door. Some lights, particularly smart outdoor floodlights, have motion sensors built right in. Most of the time, it's possible to tie light and sensor together regardless of brand.
