No New Kindle This Year

For a little while now market watchers had been predicting a new, stripped-down – and cheaper – version of Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader aimed at students arriving before the end of the year.

It’s not going to happen.

Talking to the New York Times, Amazon’s Craig Berman was categorical in his denial:

"Don’t believe everything you read — there’s a lot of rumor and speculation out there about Kindle. One thing I can tell you for sure is that there will be no new version of Kindle this year. A new version will come out sometime next year at the earliest."
He wouldn’t be drawn on whether that new version would be aimed at the student market.

Ring Battery Doorbell vs. Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen): What’s new with the latest model?
The Ring Battery Doorbell installed near a front door.

The Ring Battery Doorbell is the successor to the popular Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen). Both offer many of the same features -- and if you’re a current owner of the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), you’re probably wondering if upgrading to the Ring Battery Doorbell is worthwhile. Here’s a look at the two video doorbells to help you decide which is best for your home.
Design

The new Ring Battery Doorbell and old Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) look very similar. Around this doorbell button is Ring's iconic glowing blue circle. They both look great, and upgrading to the Ring Battery Doorbell won’t change the appearance of your front door.

SimpliSafe launches AI-powered detection system alongside the new Outdoor Security Camera Series 2
The SimpliSafe Outdoor Security Camera Series 2 mounted outside.

After spending some time in early access, SimpliSafe’s Active Guard Outdoor Protection feature is now available to the public. Using AI technology in conjunction with its team of security experts, Active Guard Outdoor Protection is designed to detect and stop crime before it happens. It’s available on the new Outdoor Security Camera Series 2, though you’ll need to enroll in a monthly membership to get full use of the service.

SimpliSafe isn’t new to the world of AI-powered crime prevention, as you’ll already find a similar feature on the Smart Alarm Wireless Indoor Camera. That functionality is great -- but if an indoor camera is picking up intruders, it means they’ve already made it inside your home. The Outdoor Security Camera Series 2 and Active Guard Outdoor Protection are looking to fix that, as the system can react to threats and alert SimpliSafe agents within 30 seconds of catching a motion event.

The Wired Floodlight Camera is the latest smart home security gadget from Arlo. It builds off the existing Arlo Pro 3 Wireless Floodlight Camera, offering many of the same features, but boasting a new wired design that provides constant power -- ensuring you never miss a motion event because of dead batteries.

Unlike some cameras that only capture 1080p video, the Arlo Wired Floodlight Camera captures 2K footage. The enhanced resolution makes it easier to pick out details in your motion events and zoom in with higher clarity. Coupled with HDR and color night vision, you should get crisp images at all times of day. You’ll also find articulating floodlights flanking both sides of the camera that can be easily maneuvered to illuminate most areas of your yard.
