Amazon.com announced today that original programming from the Showtime premium cable network is now available for digital download via Amazon’s Unbox online video service.
The deal puts programming from Showtime original series Weeds,Sleeper Cell,Dave Chapelle’s ‘For WhatIt’s Worth’,Fat Actress,Penn & Teller: BS! and Free for All online for $1.99 per episode. Hit series The L Word is also part of the deal, marking the first time the series has been available for (legal) download anywhere.
“Showtime is always looking for creative new ways to bring our great original series to a larger audience,” said Robert Hayes, Showtime Networks Digital Media’s senior vice president and general manager, in a release. “Amazon’s Unbox is a perfect platform for this as viewers who want to experience Showtime’s programs can visit Amazon.com and download episodes of shows like Weeds,Sleeper Cell, and The L Word, to their PC. We’re excited to be an early provider of premium programming for Amazon’s Unbox.”
To promote the new deal, from October 18 to 25 Amazon.com is offering downloads the pilot of the new Showtime program Dexter for just $.01.
The new Showtime offerings complement a spate of network televison programming available via Unbox, including CBS dramas CSI and Numb3rs, as well as a selection of programming from Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, Fox, and Viacom’s MTV Networks channels.
Amazon Unbox requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2; Macs and earlier Windows operating systems are not supported.
