Washing machines take a beating for Guinness World Record

“All the washing machines were harmed in the making of this record,” Guinness World Records proclaims in what must surely itself be a contender for The World’s Most Ridiculous Record.

You see, it involves hurling a washing machine as far as possible. And that’s it.

For those who love washing machines, or who simply shudder at the mere thought of perfectly decent technology getting smashed to bits, the video below will be a hard watch.

But if you’re curious to find out just how far someone can lob a contraption that ordinarily should live quietly in your home while performing occasional garment-cleaning duties, then dive right in.

Farthest Washing Machine Throw - Guinness World Records

The footage is from Italy’s Lo Show Dei Record (“The Show of Records”), which took place in Milan earlier this year. Guinness World Records shared the video this week.

The contest saw Swedish athlete Johan Espenkrona go up against fellow athlete Kelvin de Ruiter of the Netherlands.

With Guinness World Records officials in attendance, the pair set about hurling through the air three washing machines each weighing 101.4 pounds (46 kilograms).

They ultimate goal was to beat the existing world record for the longest throw of a washing machine, which stood at 13 feet 6.6 inches (4.13 meters).

And Espenkrona achieved just that, winning the showdown with a throw of 14 feet 7.2 inches (4.45 meters) and earning a new Guinness World Record. Albeit a bit of a silly one.

The athletes’ technique suggests that if you ever find yourself having to pick up and fling a washing machine through the air (tip: Remove all garments and water first), the best way to do it is to first balance it on your head before taking a short run-up to launch it forward. Though it’s probably harder than it looks.

Up for another absurd record? Then check out this video featuring some crazy parallel parking stunts.

You Asked: What’s the most impressive thing you saw at CES?
You Asked CES Editors Cut

On today’s special edition of You Asked, we tracked down each of our editors and put them on the spot to find out what they thought was the most impressive thing they saw at CES 2025 in Early January. Let’s find out what they had to say.
Panasonic Z95B

There’s been some really cool TV tech at CES, but the thing I’m most excited about is the new Panasonic Z95B. Instead of the regular OLED display structure we’ve seen in recent years with MLA technology, this uses a four-layer panel structure. It features individual red, green, and blue layers (two of the latter) for the emissive light.

Wyze cameras can now use AI to summarize your motion events
A text alert from Wyze summarized using AI.

Wyze has officially launched Cam Unlimited Pro, a new subscription that gives you access to several AI-powered features. This includes Descriptive Alerts -- text notifications generated by AI that accurately summarize motion events triggered by your camera. It’s a powerful feature, and one that should give you highly detailed alerts so you can determine if you need to dive into the Wyze app to watch the full video clip.

For example, an old alert from Wyze might say something like “Pet detected by Backyard Cam.” With Descriptive Alerts, that’ll change to “Small white dog playing with tennis ball in backyard at 4:04 PM.” It can also give you accurate descriptions of folks at your front door, letting you know if they’ve dropped off a package or delivered groceries.

CES 2025 might have turned me into a green thumb
The Petal camera and Wonder Blocks on a blue background.

There was no shortage of awesome innovations at CES 2025, including robot vacuums with robotic arms, gorgeous LED TVs, and unique smartwatches. But some of the most exciting reveals were for products designed to help you become a master gardener. I’ve long been interested in turning my home into a forest -- but since I often travel for long stretches of the year and seem to have a penchant for drying up house plants, it’s not something that’s become a reality. However, two new gadgets at CES 2025 might finally turn me into a green thumb, thanks to powerful features created to help keep plants flourishing throughout your home.

The first is the futuristic PlantaForm Indoor Smart Garden, a dome-like device that uses fogponics to grow plants with less water than hydroponic systems. This technology can deliver mist directly to plants roots, eliminating the need for soil. And while the dome provides tons of brilliant light to the leaves, it doesn’t spill over into your home thanks to dimming tinted panels. Toss in a robust mobile app to walk you through the gardening process, and it’ll be all but impossible to grow indoor plants with the Plantaform Indoor Smart Garden.
