Apple’s Safari 4 Beta Draws on Other Browsers for Inspiration

Apple

While many of even the most stalwart Apple fans have abandoned Safari in favor of the all-popular Firefox, Apple hasn’t given up on redemption just yet. On Tuesday, the company released a beta of Safari 4, which rolls a number of improvements – including a much-needed boost in speed – into the browser.

Among the boldest claims for Safari, Apple says the new Nitro JavaScript engine it runs can 30 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and three times faster than Firefox 3. That speed also carries over to regular HTML pages, which Apple says it will load three times faster than either browser.

Besides the advertised increases in speed, Apple has also thickened the feature list for Safari to compete with the likes of Firefox and Google Chrome. For instance, it borrows Opera’s thumbnailed array of most-visited sites with a feature called Top Sites. And like Chrome, it offers a more powerful search bar (which offers suggestions from Google as you type) with a feature called Smart Search Field. Tabs on Top even pushes tabs into the title bar to save room, another feature borrowed from Chrome.

Apple will bring some unique features to the table, though, such as Cover-Flow style browsing for history and bookmarks, and a single search form to scour the titles, addresses and text of previously visited Web pages.

The Safari 4 beta is available immediately as a free download from Apple.

YouTube gets parental code feature on TV to protect kids
YouTube on TV asking for parent code.

YouTube has had quite a monumental year in terms of user engagement, logging in over a billion hours of content streamed daily on TV sets alone. However, the platform is also home to a sea of content that isn’t safe for children, which is why a dedicated kids' experience has been there for a while.

Now, YouTube is adding a password protocol that will keep young users from accessing any other profile apart from their designated kid's profile on a TV. In a community update, the company introduced the new Parent Code feature that will block kids from accessing user profiles for adults in their household.

Aqara Smart Lock U100 woman entering home with hands full, pet

At the risk of sounding dull, the key to the smart home begins with — in my humble opinion — the front door. Allow me to explain. One of the top recommendations I always give for people starting a smart home is to install either a video doorbell or a smart lock. When used together, they are a tour de force. You can let package couriers in temporarily to drop an expensive delivery inside your home -- instead of having it sit around outside for hours. You can also issue guest or temp keys for family, friends, and beyond. Which brings us to the topic of today, Aqara's smart locks. They do all of this and more and they're on sale today for a pretty hefty discount.

The Aqara Smart Lock U100 and Aqara Smart Lock U300 are the focus today, and you can get up to 32% off at Amazon from now until December 22. The U100 is $130 instead of $190, while the U300 is $180 instead of $230. Let's talk a bit more about what they can do.

Should you invest in a smart home gym or stick with a gym membership?
Tonal Fitness Smart Mirror

Home gyms have come a long way over the past few years. Instead of a simple workout bench and some weights, you’ll now find smart home gyms that can provide custom workouts tailored to your needs. They can also track your stats, provide advice, showcase lessons, and even sync you with a larger community of users working with the same gear. However, many smart home gyms also require a subscription -- which can range from $15 to $50, making them an expensive proposition.

So, should you invest in a smart home gym or stick with a traditional gym membership? That’s not an easy question to answer, and the truth is that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Some folks might benefit from the ease of access offered by a smart home gym, while others might enjoy the motivation and socialization provided by a traditional gym.
