Tesla Motors unveils new car factory

Tesla Motors has unveiled its new Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, where the electric car company said it will be building its Model S as well as future electric vehicles. This car plant was once the NUMMI factory, but closed in April of this year.

Tesla purchased the factory in May, saying its new plant “is the only auto assembly plant in California, and the first facility dedicated exclusively to the mass production of electric vehicles.” It is from here that the company plans to build its Model S electric premium sedan, which will include an optional extended-range battery pack to allow the vehicle to travel over 300 miles per charge.

Purchasing the plant was not a cheap offering for Tesla, with the San Francisco Chronicle reporting the price tag to be around $42 million. 500 workers will eventually be on-site building electric cars, with larger numbers planned for later. Tesla separately is developing an all-electric version of the RAV4 SUV with Toyota as well.

“This is a momentous day in Tesla history, turning our advanced electric vehicle technology into a mass manufacturing reality,” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a statement. “Model S is blazing a new trail for the industry and it will all happen right here – the Tesla Factory gives us plenty of room to grow.”

What can Amazon Alexa Built-in do in your car?
For starters, let’s differentiate between the various Alexa products for your car. There is Alexa Built-in, which comes factory-installed in some new vehicles (see which ones here). If you have an older car but still want to get some smarts, you can add Echo Auto as an aftermarket module (learn how to install Alexa in your car). For the sake of this article, we’ll focus on the Built-in version, since it’s more reliable and connected than the add-on version.

During today's Amazon event, Ring made several surprising announcements, including one on the company's expansion into automotive security with three new security products focused on cars: The Ring Car Alarm, the Ring Car Cam, and the Ring Car Connect.

The Ring Car Alarm is a low-cost product designed to plug into the OBD (on-board diagnostics) II port of the majority of vehicles on the road and send real-time alerts to owners. The Ring Car Alarm will alert you of a bump, break-in, tow, and more. When the Ring Car Alarm detects an event, it sends a notification through the Ring App. Users can then trigger the siren. The Ring Car Alarm can be connected to other Ring or Alexa-enabled devices so that users can also receive audible notifications. It should be noted that some of the Ring Car Alarm’s features require connectivity with Amazon Sidewalk, a shared network system that will launch later this year.

Phyn will pick up some awards, unveil two new water-saving products at CES 2020

Phyn, a company that creates water-saving products, has won two CES 2020 Innovation Awards in the Smart Home and Tech For a Better World product categories. The company isn't just going to Vegas to collect awards, though.

Today, January 3, the company announced that it is introducing the Phyn XL 1.5 and the Phyn XL 2 at CES 2020. The two new water-efficiency tools for commercial properties, large homes, and new construction are based on their predecessor, the Phyn Plus, and fit supply lines up to 2 inches.
