Apple said to open temporary store at SXSW

The tech-savvy taste-makers who plan to attend this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) music and technology festival in Austin, Texas, may have had to miss out on one of 2011’s biggest gadget releases — that of Apple’s iPad 2 tablet — if they wanted to be at the festival for opening day this Friday. Luckily for them, Apple has reportedly decided to set up a temporary store in Austin to satisfy the needs of anyone who can’t wait until the end of ‘South by’ to get their hands on an iPad 2 — or at least can’t be bothered to leave the festival grounds.

The 5,000-square-foot store will be located in the Scarbrough Building on the corner of Congress Avenue and West Sixth Street in downtown Austin, reports the Austin Statemsan. Construction crews are currently working to retrofit the space with all the required Apple branding and design touches.

Apple’s decision to bring the store to SXSW appears to have been a last-minute one. According to real estate broker Rance Wilemon, who handled the deal, Apple representatives only notified him on Monday about their plans.

“They came in town on Monday, did a quick tour, found a spot, and they’re in there working and will open by Friday,” Wilemon told the Statesman. Wilemon concedes that he “would have loved to have had them” in Austin’s popular downtown Second Street district instead of the location the Apple chose. But he understands that the temporary store, which is expected to stay open for only two weeks, is intended to be more a part of SXSW than the city of Austin itself.

After all, Austin is already home to two Apple stores, which together reportedly bring in roughly $30 million per year.

Like anything else Apple, the company has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the store, with an official Apple spokesman only saying that he was “unaware of the store.”

If Apple products from the last decade are known for anything, it’s for being incredibly thin and light. Now, almost five years to the day since former head designer Jony Ive left Apple, his obsession for weightlessness looks set to come roaring back at the company that once employed him.

The new Surface Pro finally offers the iPad Pro a worthy challenger
The new Surface Pro on a table.

Coincidentally or not, the two most important tablets of 2024 were announced within a couple of weeks of each other. First was the updated Apple iPad Pro, which was announced on May 7, 2024, and began shipping on May 15, 2024. Then, on May 20, 2024, a radically new Microsoft Surface Pro was announced and is expected to ship in June, 2024, carrying Microsoft's new Copilot+ designation.

The iPad Pro received Apple's latest Silicon chipset, the M4, along with a new tandem OLED display. The Surface Pro will be shipping exclusively with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and Windows on ARM. It, too, offers a new OLED display. Which of these two new tablets is right for you?

I ask again: Will Apple ever merge the Mac and iPad?
An Apple iPad and a MacBook together on a desk alongside a pair of headphones.

Every few months, we hear the same argument being made: Apple should bring the Mac and the iPad closer together -- or even merge them and their operating systems completely -- to create some sort of hybrid device that would solve all of Apple’s problems. While I don’t entirely agree with these assessments, they do provide an interesting look into how your Apple devices might work in the coming years.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is the latest to throw his hat into the ring, and the reporter’s Power On newsletter has detailed what he believes Apple should do to shape the future of the Mac and the iPad.
