Apple to release iPad 3 in early 2012 with Retina display, reports WSJ

Just when you thought they had gone away, the iPad 3 rumors are back, and they’re better than ever. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is well on its way with the next iPad, and plans to launch the third-generation tablet in early 2012.

On top of that news, WSJ‘s Lorraine Luk, reporting from Taipei, Taiwan, says that Apple is working to pack an ultra-high resolution “Retina” display into the device.

“The next generation iPad is expected to feature a high resolution display – 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the iPad 2 – and Apple’s suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3,” writes Luk. “Suppliers said Apple has placed orders for a 9.7-inch screen device.”

This report corroborates Monday’s news from Taiwan-based DigiTimes that Apple was forced to shelve its plans to release the next iPad this fall due to technological problems with the larger Retina display. DigiTimes also reported that the iPad 3 would have a resolution of 2048 by 1536, and measure 9.7 inches, which is the same as both the original iPad and iPad 2.

None of this should come as particularly surprising news to Apple watchers. The only device that currently sports the spectacular Retina display is, of course, the iPhone 4. It only makes sense that Apple would improve its already-popular tablet by giving it a far better-looking screen. And it’s certainly no shocker that the next iPad will come out in early 2012 — the iPad 2 came out in early 2011, and Apple often sticks to its own annual schedule.

That said, Apple most certainly did not stick to its release schedule for this year’s iPhone, official news about which we are all still anxiously waiting.

You can now use an external webcam with Microsoft Teams on your iPad. Here’s how
Home screen layout of the 2024 iPad mini.

For a lot of people, the iPad is the device they choose to work with, which may include taking video calls. Though the front-facing camera on iPads has gotten better over time, many still prefer external webcams because they’re often much better than the built-in webcam on your tablet or even laptop. And now, if you use Microsoft Teams on iPad, you’re finally able to use external cameras, as Microsoft has announced via a blog post.

When we say "finally," it’s because Apple has included support for external USB-C cameras on the iPad since iPadOS 17. So technically, Microsoft is a little late to the party with this feature. But if you have to use Microsoft Teams for work and you tend to use the iPad most of the time, then this is certainly welcome news.

An Apple insider just gave us a hint about the M5 iPad Pro release date
Home Screen of the M4 iPad Pro.

Apple's line of iPad Pro tablets are almost powerful enough to work as complete laptop replacements, depending on your use case. When a new iPad is announced, it's big news — almost as big as when Apple confirms a release date.

While that hasn't happened just yet for the M5 iPad Pro, an analyst with a solid track record says to expect mass production in the second half of next year. Ming-Chi Kuo reported that time frame on Medium, and assuming this is accurate, it's safe to assume we can expect the M5 iPad Pro to be released sometime in late 2025.

The 11-inch iPad Pro M2 sold out, but you can get the iPad Pro M4 for the same price
iPad Pro with M2 inside.

If you've been looking forward to the arrival of this year's Cyber Monday Apple deals. it's time to get excited. There are some excellent deals. Best Buy was offering the Wi-Fi + Cellular model of the 11-inch Apple iPad Pro M2 for only $1,099, following a $1,000 discount that nearly halved the tablet's original price of $2,099. But since there's always high demand for savings on Apple's iPad from Cyber Monday deals, that offer is sold out. Don't panic, though. Best Buy also has the 11-inch Apple iPad Pro with M4 Chip for the same price -- $1,099. It's only a savings of $100, down from $1,199, but that's still a fantastic price. We highly recommend shopping this deal before it sells out too.

Why you should buy the 11-inch Apple iPad Pro M4 instead
The Apple iPad Pro M2 wasn't the latest version of the powerful tablet -- that distinction goes to the Apple iPad Pro M4, yet both have rightfully taken their place in our list of the best iPads as the best premium option. Since the first deal on the M2 model sold out, you're getting the best of the best right now for the same price, anyway.
