AT&T Debuts $40 3G Candybar Phone

AT&T Debuts $40 3G Candybar Phone

If the iPhone and its pricy ilk have lost their luster in the hazy midst of the recession, AT&T has been paying attention. On Thursday, the company revealed that the latest phone to join its line-up of handsets would be the Pantech C630, an unassuming candybar-style phone that will sell for $40 (with strings attached).

Though its decidedly low price point dismisses many of the flashier features found in high-end smartphones, the C630 still gets aGPS, music, chat and video capabilities rolled into a relatively small and lightweight (78 gram) package. The phone also works on AT&T’s 3G network, supports stereo Bluetooth, has a 1.3-megapixel camera, and can expand its memory up to 16GB using microSD cards.

“The C630 is a little phone with big functionality,” said Patrick Beattie, vice president of sales and marketing at Pantec, in a statement. “We packed a lot in this device while working to keep the price affordable. Pantech believes that advanced functionality can be available for all levels of users.”

AT&T will begin carrying the phone on Friday, Dec. 12. For $40 with both a two-year service agreement and mail-in rebate.

Samsung has gotten better about longer support for its devices over the past several years, but this also appears to have become a problem. For example, when the new update breaks your device and requires a factory reset to fix it.

I still don’t have 5G at home, and the reasons why amazed me
4G reception bars on an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

As I write these words, seated in my home office, my phone has one single bar of 4G reception. If I go to a different room, I may see two bars.

I have repeatedly wondered why I do not have 5G reception at home. Considering it's nearing the end of 2024, it's a not unreasonable request given 5G launched here in the U.K. in mid-2019. I decided to find out what was going on. What I discovered was a mix of expected, and highly unexpected, reasons why 5G continues to not be available near me.

Is the iPhone 16 in trouble? Early sales data doesn’t look good
The iPhone 16 laying face-down outside.

The iPhone 16 came out swinging, but its blows might lack a certain oomph. According to AppleInsider, a Morgan Stanley report states that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus sold roughly 37 million units in their first weekend. Despite this, demand appears to be lower than it was for the iPhone 15. This metric is measured in terms of lead times — in other words, how long it takes for your order to arrive once you click that "buy" button.

Lead times are much shorter this year compared to last year, indicating lower demand. Specifically, the times are as follows:
