Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 have wireless charging?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 was recently revealed at Galaxy Unpacked and it is, pardon us, flippin’ marvelous. While Samsung hasn’t made many big changes to the formula that made last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 so good, it has bolstered the Z Flip 6 with a more durable body, upgraded internal specs, and a new main camera lens that makes it a much more enticing prospect for picture takers.

But there’s more to a phone than just its specs or its camera, and for many people, the convenience of wireless charging is a big deal. Or perhaps you simply have a bunch of wireless charging pads and don’t want to waste them. Either way, you’re going to want to know if the Z Flip 6 has the ability to charge wirelessly. Here’s whether (or not) the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has wireless charging.

Just like last year’s model, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has wireless charging built-in. You can place it down on a wireless charging pad, and it’ll happily pick up power. Wireless charging speed is unchanged, too, with the Z Flip 6 slurping up watts at the industry standard rate of 15W. That’s not slow, but it’s far from the speeds that phones like the OnePlus 12 are capable of.

And it’s not the only wireless charging trick the Z Flip 6 has up its sleeve, as it also has a feature we’ve seen on a bunch of flagship smartphones.

Does the Flip 6 have reverse wireless charging, too?

Reverse wireless charging is included in the Z Flip 6, and if you’re not sure what that is, it’s basically using the wireless charging apparatus to send power out rather than sucking it in. In essence, your phone becomes a charging pad itself. While you’re not likely to want to charge a phone with it because that will see your phone’s battery drop fast, it is good for topping up small accessories. The relatively small batteries on a pair of earphones or a smartwatch are perfect for this and can be easily nestled down onto the back of your phone — even the folded Z Flip 6.

The charging rate is slow, though. At 4.5W, it’s not just slower than the Z Flip 6’s wireless charging rate, but also slower than the slowest wireless charging pad you’re likely to find. Still, if you feel you may need it as an emergency way to fill up your headphones or watch on the go, then this is a great feature to have available.

How fast is the Flip 6’s wired charging?

Here’s where we hit a little snag. Because the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s wired charging is a little bit disappointing. At 25W, it’s only a bit faster than the fastest wireless charging speed and well behind similarly priced phones. For instance, the Galaxy S24 Plus has a similar price, but sports a 45W charging rate, blazing past the Z Flip 6’s 25W. It continues to be a bit of a disappointment for such a technologically advanced smartphone to be hampered in this way. Sure, we get it, some corners had to be cut to keep this phone at a reasonable price, but how can that logic apply to the $1,900 Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is also limited to 25W?

Minor gripes aside, 25W isn’t slow, but it is rapidly becoming slower than people should accept on a four-figure smartphone. It’ll still fill your Z Flip 6 fairly quickly, just not as fast as 45W would.

We just got an early tease for Samsung’s next folding phones
Samsung Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung, like most other phone manufacturers, sticks to a pretty predictable schedule: a new numbered iteration per model per year. That's why we weren't surprised to hear that a Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 were slated for 2025, but we now have confirmation. Their codenames just leaked, and we also learned of an unexpected third model.

GalaxyClub broke the news after receiving information from Samsung. According to the site, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is code-named B7, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is code-named Q7. There's also a third model with the code name Q7M, but it's not clear what this entry actually is. Since it bears a derivative code name, this handset is likely a spinoff of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — though we don't know what that entails.

The best folding phones in 2024: the 6 best you can buy
Someone opening the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Folding smartphones are a fairly mature market in 2024. When they first launched, foldables were futuristic and exciting, albeit buggy. With time, they have been refined and improved to cater to everyday use. Their prices are gradually decreasing as the technology advances, but they still remain expensive purchases, making it crucial to make the right buying decision.

Currently, there are two types of folding smartphones available on the market. The first type resembles a regular non-folding phone, but can be unfolded into a larger tablet-like device. The second type is similar to the classic Motorola Razr clamshell phones, where a normal-sized phone can be folded in half to become more compact and pocketable. Although both use the same screen and hinge technology, they cater to different needs.
