First tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich launched, sub-$100 price tag

It’s so cheap that it’s hard to believe it’ll be any good, but what makes the new Ainovo-branded NOVO7 tablet from Ingenic and MIPS notable is the fact that it’s the world’s first tablet to run the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Retailing at $99, the device is only available in China for the moment, though should be coming to the US and other countries “in the next several months,” according to a statement issued by MIPS Technologies on Monday.

The NOVO7 sports a 7-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, with 8- and 9-inch form factors reportedly coming soon. It’s powered by a 1GHz single-core MIPS processor, has 4GB storage and includes support for Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The device has ports for USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3 and microSD, is capable of 1080p video decoding and is equipped with dual front/rear cameras. Battery life comes in at around seven hours for general use.

Senior vice president of mobile at Google, Andy Rubin, commented on the new tablet, saying: “I’m thrilled to see the entrance of MIPS-based Android 4.0 tablets into the market. Low cost, high performance tablets are a big win for mobile consumers and a strong illustration of how Android’s openness drives innovation and competition for the benefit of consumers around the world.“

Amit Rohatgi, mobile principal architect at MIPS, said the launch of the NOVO7 “was effectively breaking the price performance barrier for tablets today.”

For those in the US who wouldn’t mind trying out the device sooner rather than later, it can be ordered online, though you’ll need to be prepared to fork out more than half the cost of the tablet to have the thing shipped.

Ainovo is definitely stealing a march on all the other tablet producers with the release of the NOVO7, and at such a low price it’s going to attract interest from those looking for a dirt cheap tablet. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, but in this case it’s just possible you might be getting a little more.

What do IP ratings mean? Waterproof ratings explained

Most flagship phones these days boast some level of water resistance, and you'll find "IP ratings" on everything from the Apple iPhone 16 to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. But that got us wondering: Just what do manufacturers mean when they use terms like "waterproof" and "water-resistant?" What constitutes a "rugged" device? Just how many times can you drop your phone in the toilet before you can expect it to bite the dust?

As it turns out, some terms that describe a phone's ruggedness are actually standardized, and there's a whole lot more to them than meets the eye. IP ratings measure a device's resistance to water, dust, and other particles, while military specs describe structural integrity. Some certifications are a little less precise than others, but taken together, they give a rough idea of how the best waterproof smartphones will hold up against the elements.

I already damaged my Apple Watch Series 10
i already damaged my apple watch series 10 dt 1

I don’t think I’m clumsy, but I swing my arms a lot and still grimace every time a smartwatch on my wrist hits an immovable object. Yet, for all this movement, I’ve never managed to deeply scratch or lightly crack an Apple Watch display … until now.

The Apple Watch Series 10 doesn’t have many compromises over the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and I even made the switch permanently before this happened. It’s big, thin, and beautiful, but the Apple Watch Series 10 also uses a less durable protective shield for its display.
