Grovemade –the Portland, OR-based company best known for it’s signature line of wooden iPhone cases– is on a bit of a tear lately. In the past month alone they’ve released a slew of new products, including an entire fleet of hardwood desktop accessories, and a unique timepiece made from wood and leather. But apparently they’re not done yet. Earlier today the company pulled the curtain back on yet another new product, and once again it’s something completely new and different: a limited edtion run of iPhone docks made entirely from machined metal.
“The Black Dock is the first product we’ve introduced to our collections that does not include any of our signature materials,” said Grovemade’s co-founder Ken Tomita. “As craftsmen, we enjoy working with new materials and creating something completely unexpected that is in line with our design values and principles.”
Black Dock, as they’re calling it, is constructed from a solid steel or brass base combined with an aluminum cap that’s protected with a durable matte black coating, similar to the coating used on premium knife blades. In addition to looking pretty sharp, the all-metal construction also gives the docks a good amount of heft. Each one weighs about three pounds, which means you can easily dock and undock without experiencing the dreaded cling.
Each dock is designed to work with most late model iPhones, including the 5/5S/5C and 4/4S, and will adjusts to accommodate phones with or without a case. Available in three different styles, the limited edition Black Dock includes 50 units of the brass base, 100 units of the silver steel base, and 100 units of the black steel base. The Black Dock featuring a black or silver base retails for $119, and the Black Dock featuring the brass base retails for $149.
