What You Need

  • An iPhone with iOS 18.2 or later installed

Please note: iOS 18.2 remains in beta. As such, the steps below might change before the update is released to the public.

How to change your default calling and messaging apps

There are just a few steps you need to take to change your default calling and messaging apps. Apple has arranged all the defaults you can change into a combined hub, making it easy to change everything at once.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone with iOS 18.2 or later installed.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap on the Apps option.

Step 3: In the Apps section, you'll find a new Default apps option at the top. Select it.

Step 4: You'll see options for both Calling and Messaging. Tap on the one you want to change.

Step 5: From there, you'll see a list of the compatible apps installed on your iPhone. Choose the app you want to set as your default calling or messaging app.

Native app alternatives

But why would you change your calling or messaging app? After all, Apple’s iMessage offers many great features, including SharePlay and Memoji. Additionally, the official Phone app is the go-to app for making direct calls with handsets. Heck, you're probably very used to just using Apple's versions, so why change?

Some alternatives, like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram, are preferred because they facilitate international communication, while others provide an extra layer of security. Additionally, some apps are chosen for their availability on platforms beyond those provided by Apple. In some cases, this makes it easier to communicate with a wider audience. Down at the simplest level, you may prefer to use a different app because it offers features Apple's don't. Whatever reason, you'll be able to dive into the Apple Appe Store and check out the alternatives.

Once iOS 18.2 is released, Apple is making it possible to select a third-party solution as your default calling and messaging apps. That's good for choice and competition.

The iOS 18.2 update is expected to be released to the public before the end of the year.

A hidden iOS 18.1 upgrade made it harder to extract data from iPhones
A person holding the Apple iPhone 16 Plus.

Apple Intelligence was the most notable upgrade that arrived on iPhones with the iOS 18 series of updates. But it seems Apple reinforced the security protocols in the background that could prevent bad actors from gaining unauthorized access to iPhones that haven’t been unlocked in a while by their legitimate owner.

Earlier this month, 404Media reported that law enforcement officials are troubled by iPhones that are mysteriously rebooting. Citing a report courtesy of officials in Michigan, the outlet notes that the reboots are hampering the ability to access what’s stored on the phones through brute-force unlock methods.

Apple quietly nixed this Apple Intelligence feature from iOS 18.2
Image Playground on iPad.

One of the most highly anticipated features of Apple Intelligence, Image Playground, has finally launched in the iOS 18.2 developer and public betas. This artificial intelligence tool, announced in June, enables users to create cartoon-like images from text descriptions. Unfortunately, at least in the beta version, one of Image Playground's announced features is missing.

As first noted on X (formerly Twitter) by @nicolas09f9 (via MacRumors), Image Playground was once expected to feature three design styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. For whatever reason, the latter isn't a choice in the beta.

Our iPhones are our primary devices to check the latest news, connect with friends on social media, and capture important memories through photos.

A significant camera upgrade is anticipated for the iPhone Pro series; however, this enhancement will not be available on the current iPhone 16 Pro or the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series. Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to introduce a main rear camera with a variable aperture for the first time. This information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who shared the details on Medium.
