iOS 13.6 is now out. Here are the newest features

Apple released iOS 13.6 on Wednesday with a slew of new features.

There are updates to Apple News, fresh support for Car Key, which allows you to use your iPhone to unlock your vehicle, and a coronavirus symptom logger in the Health app.

Apple News updates include narrated audio stories and audio briefings of the day’s latest news. You can even listen to Apple News audio stories while driving via Apple CarPlay.

The highly anticipated Car Key feature was first announced at the Worldwide Developer’s Conference last month and is meant to replace your bulky keys with your smartphone. Car Key allows you to lock, unlock, and start your car with your iPhone — you can even create driver-specific profiles to give other drivers in your family access. The digital key is available in the Wallet, but it only works on the 2021 BMW 5 Series for now.

There’s also a new symptoms category in the Health app that specifically logs coronavirus symptoms like fever, chills, or coughing and shares them with third-party contact tracing apps.

To update your iPhone to the latest iOS software, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Apple will continue to release minor iOS updates leading up to the debut of iOS 14, which is scheduled to release in mid-September. Right now, it’s available for developers and public beta testers.

The iOS 14 update will include a new way to use widgets, a picture-in-picture functionality, a new Translate app that can translate 11 different languages, redesigned group chats, and App Clips that allow users to access apps without having to download the full version.

RCS messaging has gained popularity by leaps and bounds this past year, especially in the Western market. More than 1 billion people are estimated to use RCS messaging at present, and a huge part of that growth is due to Apple introducing RCS compatibility with the arrival of iOS 18.

While iOS 18 has supported RCS messaging with Android phones since it launched in September, carrier support was a bit scarce upon launch. Now, Apple has updated its support page with an expanded list of carriers that support RCS.

If your iPhone can handle iOS 18.2, it can probably handle iOS 19

The last few iPhone updates have brought a lot of changes with them. Just take a look at iOS 18.2: It introduced a ton of AI-powered features that had never before been available. If you have an older phone, it's easy to worry that its hardware won't be up to snuff for the next round of updates. For now, you can breathe easy: If your iPhone can handle iOS 18, then it should also work with iOS 19, according to a new leak.

The news comes from the French site iPhoneSoft. Although Apple guarantees five years of support for its devices, some devices get supported for longer periods of time, but this tip suggests that any phone currently capable of downloading and installing iOS 18 will also work with iOS 19, although some features could be limited.

The next iOS 18 update is on its way. Here’s what we know

When iOS 18.2 released just over a week ago, it unlocked a lot of long-awaited features like Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and improvements to writing tools. Now, it seems like another update could be just around the corner: version 18.2.1.

MacRumors found evidence of the update in their analytic logs, a source that has supposedly revealed quite a few iOS versions before release. Given that this is a minor update, it isn't likely to come with new features or anything groundbreaking. Instead, it will most likely be targeted at bug fixes, although no specific problems have been named. You should expect this update to drop either in late December or early January, but a year-end release is more likely.
