iPhone 4S zooms up Flickr camera-phone chart

Well, that didn’t take long. Only a month after its release, the iPhone 4S has zoomed up the camera-phone charts to become the second most popular smartphone used by Flickr users to upload photos.

A graph on the popular photo sharing website shows that the iPhone 4S is now ahead of the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as the HTC EVO 4G. Way in front, however, is the iPhone 4, although that model has been out almost 18 months.

Indeed, the iPhone 4 remains the most popular of all devices for uploading pictures to Flickr, with Nikon’s D90 dSLR camera in second place.

The iPhone 4S reportedly sold four million units on its first weekend of sales in October, immediately creating an army of photographers ready to upload to Flickr. With a slew of photo apps making it easy to perform a few quick edits, and the ability to upload instantly to Flickr, it’s little wonder the popular device has already taken the number two spot in Flickr’s chart. Some companies have even developed snap-on lenses, giving iPhone photo enthusiasts even more options.

Compared with all of the functionality and control that a dSLR camera offers, the iPhone 4S may well be a rather simple device, but with its 8-megapixel sensor Apple’s latest smartphone can, if in the right hands, produce some highly impressive results.

Even legendary photographer Annie Leibowitz has praised the virtues of the iPhone 4S, this week calling it “the snapshot camera of today.” Speaking on MSNBC’s Rock Center news show, she said she would happily recommend Apple’s latest smartphone to anyone asking her for advice about which camera they should purchase.

With sales of the 4S apparently going from strength to strength, it’ll only be a matter of time before the iPhone 4 gives way to the 4S in Flickr’s chart.

That’s not much to give up, however, as the second generation iPhone SE still has a great display, a 12-megapixel camera with the ability to shoot 4K video, and wireless charging capability.

Apple iPhone 16 Plus vs. iPhone 14 Plus: Is it upgrade time?
Composite shot of iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 14 Plus.

It’s an exciting year for Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup, and that’s not merely because of the upcoming Apple Intelligence features. After two years of enduring relatively uninspired updates, fans of Apple’s standard iPhone and iPhone Plus models finally have a pair of iPhones that feel like more than “also-rans” compared to Apple’s flagship iPhone Pro lineup.

While the standard iPhone 16 models may not have gotten all the upgrades we hoped for, Apple is no longer arbitrarily reserving its best chips and user interface features for its flagship Pro series. In addition to the Dynamic Island and Action button, the iPhone 16 Plus gets the same Camera Control feature that Apple introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro, a powerful new A-series chip, and some unique design changes that are entirely its own.
