The LG G5 had a huge, controversial missing feature. Now it’s back

Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends.com
The LG G5 has Android 6.0 Marshmallow installed, but controversially, LG’s own user interface placed over the top of the operating system didn’t include the familiar app drawer. The feature, where a convenient list of all installed apps could be found, is used on the vast majority of Android smartphones, and familiar to many seasoned owners. Although there was a way around it, its removal caused annoyance.

Now, through a software update on its way out to G5s all over the world, the app drawer is back, proving LG listens to its customers. It’s a small update to the Home screen settings page, and found through the G5’s app update system. Rather than permanently add the app drawer, it’s available as a third option, giving you the chance to set the G5 up exactly how you want it.

Here’s how it works. To make sure the update has been applied, go to Settings, General, About Phone, and Update Center. Here, tap App Updates and download any that are waiting. The one you’re looking out for is called Home and App Drawer, and it’s about 18MB in size. Once this is done, exit and go to Settings, Display, and Home screen. Now, choose Home and App Drawer, and tick the Use As Default App box if you want to stick with the change permanently. You’ll be asked to select which Home screen option again, out of Home, EasyHome, and Home & App Drawer.

That’s it. Return to the home screen and the app drawer will have made its triumphant return. Why did LG follow companies like Huawei and ZTE in relegating the app drawer to the trash? There are rumors Google will do the same with the next version of Android, and it was preparing us all for the change over. We may learn more about whether this will happen or not during Google I/O, the developer conference set for May 18.

Your T-Mobile plan now has bigger gas discounts and international 5G
OnePlus 8T

There are a lot of financial deterrents this year keeping people from planning summer vacations, but T-Mobile is determined to help subscribers take the vacations they've been dreaming of with its newly announced Coverage Beyond initiative. In short, Coverage Beyond aims to reduce the cost of traveling for T-Mobile's most popular coverage plans by giving subscribers three great perks: free 5G data abroad, free streaming while on flights, and a handful of other travel perks like reduced gas prices.

Some of T-Mobile's previous connection efforts gave its customers limited free low-speed data and free texting while abroad. This was a good way to reduce the stress of being out of the country for a short period, but Coverage Abroad ups the ante by offering 5GB of high-speed data to all Magenta Max and Business Unlimited Ultimate plan owners in 210 countries. In countries where it's available, that "high-speed" data may even be 5G. Magenta and most other business plan owners can also count on free high-speed international data, but only in 11 select European countries.

Back to where it started: Testing 5G in the Chicagoland area
Hold holding three phones from three different carriers.

Just over a month ago, I found myself in a stadium filled with 70,000 crazy fans cheering for their respective teams. Naturally, I decided to test out how 5G would perform, as one does when at a sporting event. Now, with the same phones and the same process, I wanted to see how 5G does in a normal everyday sense. My hometown of Chicago is where the first 5G networks in the U.S. started to roll out, so I thought 2022 would be a good time to check in and see how things were going. I visited 16 different locations in the Greater Chicago area to see how things were working.
Testing it out
Just like in New Orleans, I used three identical Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra devices. Two of them were unlocked phones provided by Samsung. The third was my personal T-Mobile-branded phone purchased from Samsung.com. AT&T and Verizon both provided test SIM cards (this becomes significant later) and I used my personal T-Mobile SIM in my phone. Here's what I found.

Guaranteed Rate Field
The White Sox are the "other" baseball team in Chicago (#GoCubs), so it seemed like a good place to start my testing. It's close to downtown and draws a lot of people every year, making it ideal for a 5G build-out location. This early in the morning, there were no fans around, making it easy to walk up to the park gates.
