Watch Netflix on the go? You now have more control over how much data it uses

In March, following T-Mobile CEO John Legere’s accusation that AT&T and Verizon were throttling Netflix streams, Netflix admitted that the carriers weren’t the ones at fault, and that it was in fact the one doing the throttling. The company said it had done this to prevent users from going over their data caps, and it planned to roll out controls to allow users to personally tailor their data usage settings in May.

Netflix has kept its promise, as the company announced in a blog post today that the new cellular data usage controls are rolling out as planned. If left untouched, the Netflix mobile app defaults to automatic, which Netflix says sets the video bitrate to around 600 Kilobits per second. Now there are also five new options ranging from completely off — only allowing for streaming on Wi-Fi — to unlimited, which will stream as fast as your connection allows.

Once the iOS or Android app has updated, users can access the new controls by choosing “App Settings” from the menu, then selecting “Cellular Data Usage.” Choosing the Low setting results in about four hours of video per GB of data used, while Medium offers two hours per GB and High offers one hour per GB. The Unlimited setting isn’t recommended unless you have an unlimited data plan, something not nearly as commonplace as it once was.

“As with all streaming, actual data usage can vary based on your device capabilities and network conditions,” Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu wrote in the blog post. “Your mobile carrier also may impact the actual data usage even if you elect a higher setting in the Netflix app.”

The new data usage settings are rolling out today, so if you don’t see them yet, they should be on the way soon. For more information on the new settings, see the related Netflix help article.

One of 2024’s most acclaimed shows is now on Netflix. Here’s why you should watch it
Three people stand on a roof in Interview with the Vampire.

You know how some shows are huge on social media but they don't seem to have such a large footprint in the outside world? Well, AMC's Interview with the Vampire is one such show. Based on Anne Rice's famous book series and primarily set in the 1910s, the show follows the charismatic yet cunning vampire Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), who seduces and eventually turns the affluent Black man Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson). As in the novel, the story is framed as an interview Louis gives to a journalist in 1973.

The show is the second major adaptation of Rice's novel after the 1994 Neil Jordan version starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. However, it's an infinitely superior adaptation, showcasing the complex and changing dynamic between the two tortured vampires. Interview with the Vampire doesn't have the mass audience it deserves, but things will soon change, as the show is coming to Netflix this August, where it will hopefully find a larger audience. If you're still on the fence about whether to watch it, here are four reasons why you shouldn't miss this terrific Gothic romance.

A group of people look up in Lost.

In September 2004, ABC debuted Lost, one of the biggest hits in the history of the network. The series began as a riff on Survivor, as a group of plane crash survivors found themselves trapped on an uncharted tropical island. But soon enough, the show revealed that it was more than just a survival drama. Elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery had fans hooked from the start. By the end of its six-season run, Lost was a cultural phenomenon.

Now that Lost is back on Netflix, we're sharing the five episodes that you need to watch. These aren't the only great episodes from the show, and they may not make much sense to first-time viewers.
