Nokia announces the super affordable, super basic Nokia 207 and Nokia 208 feature phones

Nokia 208Nokia has announced a pair of new phones, but if you’re expecting them to be up with the Lumia 925 then prepare for a disappointment, as they’re not even close. Instead, we’ve been introduced to the Nokia 207 and Nokia 208, both of which are good old-fashioned feature phones, with alphanumeric keypads and little tiny screens.

It’s the Nokia 208 which is the more feature-packed of the two. Well, we say feature-packed, but what we really mean is that it has a 1.3-megapixel camera, while the Nokia 207 doesn’t have a camera at all. The camera isn’t bad either, as it has Nokia’s voice-guidance for taking selfies without a forward-facing lens, plus a burst and panorama mode.

Both phones have a 2.4-inch display with a 320 x 240 pixel resolution, and run Nokia’s Series 40 software, so there are various pre-installed apps including Facebook and Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp and Nokia’s Xpress web browser. Both the Nokia 207 and 208 have 3G HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, a microSD card slot, and a headphone port. The battery should return 500 hours of 3G standby time, and nearly five hours of 3G talktime.

Nokia says both phones are scratch-proof and easy to clean, making them suitable for more challenging environments, while each will be sold in several color options, such as red, yellow, black, and cyan. The Nokia 208 will also be produced as a dual-SIM model. The price of these little bundles of joy? Despite the slight difference in specification, both will cost $68 when they go on sale just after the summer.

If you’re looking for a technically superior smartphone from Nokia, then you may want to pay attention on July 11, when it’s expected to announce the PureView camera-equipped Lumia 1020.

Why Nokia made an Android phone it wants you to tear apart
The Nokia G22 broken down into its component parts.

HMD Global is making it easier to repair your smartphone. It has announced the Nokia G22 as the first to qualify under its new “QuickFix” program, which is aimed at minimizing the effort, knowledge, and expense that’s usually involved in replacing a broken screen or a battery that’s past its prime.

The company also has a couple of other new Android phones aimed directly at budget-conscious buyers, and all of it is part of the company's big Mobile World Congress 2023 launch lineup. Here's a look at everything that's new.

HMD Global wants you to keep your new Nokia phone and save the planet
All the devices included in HMD Global's new Circular plan.

HMD Global, the company that owns the license to make Nokia phones, is introducing a selection of new phones. And alongside those phones, there's also a new way to purchase one of them to encourage you to keep it for longer than usual. That’s right, HMD Global doesn’t want you to keep upgrading your phone, an unusual strategy for any phone maker.
Nokia's plan to 'redefine phone ownership'
The new way to buy and keep your phone is called Circular, and it will “redefine phone ownership,” according to HMD Global. So what’s it all about? On the surface, it’s a simple phone leasing service, where you sign up with the company and pay monthly for your new Nokia phone. It’s a fixed contract for just three months, then you’re free to cancel, continue, or upgrade when you want. But don't do that, because Circular is all about keeping your phone.

What makes it different from the rest is that HMD Global will reward you for keeping your phone, but not through free gifts or a break on your monthly payments. Instead, you earn virtual credits called Seed of Tomorrow (yes, really) to invest in a set of curated environmentally aware causes. The longer you keep your phone, the more seeds you get, and the more causes you can support. Unconnected, Ecologi, and Clear Rivers are the names already onboard.

This crazy Nokia phone has a pair of true wireless earbuds inside
The Nokia 5710 XpressAudio phone with its earbuds in the back.

True wireless headphones always come inside a case, so why not make that case a phone? That’s HMD Global’s thinking with the new Nokia 5710 XpressAudio, another retro classic from Nokia’s archive reimagined for today.

This time you get a normal-looking feature phone with a slide-down panel on the back, which when opened reveals a handy pair of true wireless headphones. Just like every other case for true wireless headphones, the earbuds are kept charged when placed inside the phone.
