Nokia expands its budget range with new phones from AT&T and Cricket Wireless

If you’re looking for a good budget phone, it’s tough to go wrong with Nokia’s new range of Android One phones. Customers of AT&T and Cricket Wireless now have even more choice when looking for a reasonably priced phone, thanks to the release of the Nokia 3.1 A on AT&T and the Nokia 3.1 C on Cricket Wireless.

Key Specs

  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 429
  • Memory: 3GB
  • Storage: 32GB
  • Screen size: 5.45 inches
  • Camera: 8-megapixel rear, 5-megapixel front
  • Operating system: Android 9.0 Pie

As you might expect, both phones are built upon the base of the Nokia 3.1, which we found to be an uncharacteristically disappointing Nokia phone. However, the Nokia 3.1 A and C have seen some improvements that may mean these carrier-branded options hold up much better. Both are equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 429, which will hopefully provide better performance than the Mediatek MT6750N octa-core processor in the Nokia 3.1. RAM has been upgraded to 3GB, and there’s now 32GB of storage as standard. The Nokia 3.1’s 16GB of storage really wasn’t enough, and was one of that device’s main drawbacks.

You’ll find polycarbonate on the back of the phone, rather than glass, and oddly, there’s no fingerprint sensor at all. The Nokia 3.1 A and C are slightly larger in size than the Nokia 3.1, sporting a 5.45-inch IPS LCD display in an 18:9 aspect ratio, giving you plenty of screen. Both phones run the latest Android 9.0 Pie with Google’s latest A.I. power-saving technology, Google Assistant, and other Android features. While battery capacity hasn’t been disclosed, Nokia is claiming both devices will have a two-day battery life.

Both phones will also come with the same camera suite. You’ll find a single 8-megapixel lens around the back of the Nokia 3.1 A and C, and a 5-megapixel selfie lens on the front. Both also come with the Motion Photo feature, which brings your photos to life by capturing a short video clip a moment before you press the shutter.

The Nokia 3.1 A will be available in black from Walmart stores starting June 10. The Nokia 3.1 C will be available from June 14, and you’ll be able to find it on Cricket Wireless’s website and in stores. It will be available in white. Pricing has not yet been announced for either phone, but we expect it to be a similar to the $160 Nokia 3.1.

HMD Global shows its serious about U.S. expansion with 5 new Nokia phones
HMD Global's range of new Nokia phones at CES 2022.

HMD Global has big plans for the U.S. market, and at CES 2022 it has revealed a new range of devices that cost less than $250, all coming out over the next months. Buoyed by LG and ZTE both leaving the U.S., it has struck lucrative deals with T-Mobile, Tracfone, Verizon, and other carriers to supply Nokia phones on pre-paid contracts, including low-cost feature phones.

To help achieve its ambitious targets in the U.S. for the coming year -- it's targeting number one in feature phones, and number three in pre-paid smartphones -- it has announced five new U.S. exclusive phones that will arrive during the first six months of the year. Top of the list is an affordable 5G phone, followed by three 4G phones, and a new feature phone with Kai OS software onboard.

Nokia 9 PureView won’t get Android 11 after all; HMD offers a discount instead
Nokia 9 PureView

HMD Global is breaking the update promise it made with the Nokia 9 PureView. The company shared that due to circumstances beyond its control, it would be unable to update the phone to Android 11. Instead, a discount will be offered to the Android 11-capable Nokia XR20 instead as a replacement for eligible Nokia 9 owners.

As part of the Android One program, Nokia phones benefited from the promise of at least two operating system updates, something that was emphasized as one of the selling points of phones like the Nokia 9 PureView, which launched with Android 9 and really should have received Android 11 over a year ago. While HMD Global has been notoriously inconsistent with regard to timing, this is the first time the company has simply declined to push out an update.

The Nokia X100 on a table

HMD Global is launching a new cheap 5G phone exclusively for T-Mobile and Metro, the company announced on Tuesday. Known as the Nokia X100, this phone combines 5G, a big screen, and great speakers for the low price of $252 for the 6GB RAM/128GB storage configuration.

Like most of Nokia's new phones, it's a big one. There's a 6.67-inch Full HD screen (no 90Hz at this price range) with Nokia's OZO Audio technology for an immersive audiovisual experience. There's a quad-lens camera with a 48-megapixel main camera and three other cameras that'll probably disappoint you, and all-day battery life brought by a combination of Android 11's adaptive battery and a 4,470mAh cell.
