Case maker OtterBox has introduced new ruggedized cases for RIM‘s BlackBerry 8700 and 7200 series mobile smartphone/email/PDA devices, in the form of its OtterBox 1930 and 1931 BlackBerry Cases.
The cases utilize a polycarbonate/ABS shell with a rubber overmolding which offers an improved grip as well reinforcement and drop protection for BlackBerry devices. The cases also offer water-resistant access to the BlackBerry’s keypad, scroll wheel, escape, power, mute, and side buttons—although OtterBox stresses they’re not intended to be used underwater. The case protects the BlackBerry’s LCD screen with a rigid screen cover, and Donaldson acoustic membrane vents enable sound from the BlackBerry to be heard even when the case is sealed. Users can also get to the sync/charge jack and headphone output without removing the case.
“We have already seen an interest in the cases from B2B customers, but even more so from military customers,” explained Brian Thomas, Otterbox’s Director of Sales and Marketing, in a release. “Many of our customers are working in environments that can be harmful to their device and data. The OtterBox cases designed for BlackBerry are an ideal solution for protecting technology investments.”
Both the 9130 and 1931 cases carry a MIL-STD 810F rating for shock and drops, and an IP54 rating for heavy rain and dust intrusion. But get ready to spend: the cases (apparently available now) carry a suggested retail price of $129.95—and that doesn’t include optional swivel belt clip and a refurbish kit.
