Palm today announced the Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition, which features TomTom Navigator 6 software. The package enables owners of Treo 650, 700w, and 700p smartphones to access highway and street level maps of the United States and Canada, without having to sync to computers or download map packages. The TomTom Navigator 6 software can provide voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions to destinations and automatically shows the receiver’s current location.
The GPS receiver communicates with the Palm Treo using Bluetooth wireless networking; the phone then displays real-tim location information and displays 3D maps on the Treo’s built-in LCD display. Once a destination has been programmed, the TomTom Navigator software can provide voice-prompted directions, and even enabled users to plan their trip based on preferred arrival times and speed limit information; the software can also integrate navigation with the Treo’s contact list.
Palm’s GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition includes a Bluetooth SiRFstarIII GPS receiver, the TomTom Navigator 6 software, the latest TeleAtlas maps, a 1 GB memory card with preloaded maps of the U.S. and Canada, a vehicle cradle with windshield mount, and a car charging system. The system is available now at an estimated retail price of $299.
