Sonic CD to debut on Android this year, iOS and console release to follow

This weekend’s PAX event featured a number of interesting announcements, but one in particular should have Sonic the Hedgehog fans — and Android users — pretty excited.

During the show, Sega announced plans to bring the much-revered but hard-to-find Sonic CD to Android devices by the end of the year, with other platform releases to follow.

According to Sega, the new version of Sonic CD will feature music from its original Japanese soundtrack, and will eventually find its way to Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, iPhone and iPod touch, iPad, Windows PC Digital Download, and Windows Phone later this year.

Originally released in 1993 as part of the ill-fated Sega CD system, Sonic CD is widely regarded as one of the best of the iconic hedgehog’s 2-D, platform-style adventures, despite the fact that very few fans have been able to play it. The game was released on the Sega CD system just before the company’s focus turned to its new Dreamcast console. As a result, the game became available only to those who could locate a working Sega CD system and Sonic CD disc.

The game was later rereleased on Nintendo Gamecube and Playstation 2 as part of the Sonic Gems compilation, but it arrived near the end of both consoles’ popularity.

“Ask any Sonic fan to name their favorite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at Sega of America. “Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colorful classic zones.”

The company’s announcement also hinted at some new features for the Sonic CD re-release, including widescreen graphics, “special iOS features,” and integration with Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, and PC Achievements.

6 features that iOS 18 stole from Android
An iPhone home screen with iOS 18.

Apple took to the stage in an all-singing, all-dancing presentation at WWDC 2024 to unveil iOS 18, the latest software upgrade for the iPhone. Apple Intelligence may be the headline act that's stolen all the coverage, but iOS 18 will also introduce a boatload of smaller changes that can't simply be forgotten. Once you upgrade to iOS 18, you'll get more customization options, icon theming, a game mode, and more.

Really, Apple fans have never had it so good. But if that seems familiar to some of you, well, it's because iOS is becoming more and more like Android. To Android fans like me, the irony is so, so sweet. Apple fans, enjoy your new and awesome features that have been very obviously cribbed from Android.

I can’t wait to make my iPhone look like Android with iOS 18

Apple’s WWDC 2024 keynote was quite a spectacle. It showed off a ton of new features coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, with most of it being powered with Apple Intelligence -- Apple’s own brand of AI.

But there were some other non-AI features, too, including some much-needed changes to the iPhone's home screen. It’s been a while since Apple really overhauled the home screen, the last time being iOS 14 and the ability to add widgets and create custom app icons through Shortcuts. With iOS 18, users can further customize their home screen with new ways to rearrange apps and widgets, plus the ability to theme app icons like never before.

iOS 18 has ended the iPhone vs. Android debate
Updated interface of Siri activation.

“I just have to see anything particularly useful that AI can do,” a tech journalism veteran told me ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2024 event. To a large extent, I agree with the sentiment, even though I have pushed consumer-grade AI tools in every scenario that my hardware selection allowed. By the time Apple’s event concluded, I had a strong feeling that Apple may just have delivered the most practical dose of AI on a smartphone.

We have entered the era of Apple Intelligence on iPhones. I will drop the bad news first: The whole AI platter has been served only on the latest and greatest “Pro” iPhones. They are not even available for the iPhone 15 or the iPhone 15 Plus. It seems the silicon and the onboard NPU are to blame, or maybe it's all-important memory restrictions. Similar restrictions apply for iPads, which need at least an M-class processor.
