T-Mobile Sidekick Gets Limited Editions

At a celeb-studded wingding on Beverly Hills last night, T-Mobile pressed home the idea of a Sidekick mobile device as a fashion accessory, unveiling two special edition Sidekick mobile devices sporting designs by Diane von Furstenberg and the Lifted Research Group.

“T-Mobile understands that consumers want products that help them connect in style. By partnering with iconic brands like Diane von Furstenberg and L-R-G, T-Mobile continues to lead the way in delivering innovative and fashion-forward devices that let our customers express their personal style,” said Greg Andrews, director, youth marketing, T-Mobile USA, Inc., in a release.

The design from Diane von Furstenberg features a black Sidekick body highlighted with red lip-prints on the front face; the Lifted Research Group opted for a green body with small arrow-shaped prints on the Sidekick’s front face. The limited edition Sidekicks will be available at selected T-Mobile retail locations while supplies last beginning October 30. No pricing information has been released.

The Sidekicks serve as both 1.3 megapixel cameras and cell phones, and also offer email, instant messaging, and Web browsing capabilities; the devices also act as MP3 players, offer Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and feature a unique trackball to assist navigation.

The Galaxy S25 may get the spec update it deserves
Samsung Galaxy S24 in Marble Gray held in hand.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 looks set to come with an important upgrade over the Galaxy S24: more RAM. It may sound like a simple specification bump, but if a benchmark test is correct, an increase to 12GB for the base model is entirely possible. When the Galaxy S24 launched earlier this year, it came with 8GB of RAM on its entry-level model, which many didn't consider to be a flagship specification that was in line with the phone's status and price. The Galaxy S25 is apparently raising it from 8GB to 12GB, according to a report from GSMArena.

The additional RAM means your apps will run more smoothly, with fewer hiccups and less stuttering, but we shouldn't get too excited yet. We're not sure if Samsung is completely doing away with the 8GB option, and some of the more costly Galaxy S24 phones did come with 12GB of RAM. The benchmark hinting at a RAM upgrade could also be false as they can be faked, so take it with skepticism.

Everyone is talking about e-readers again, and it's because Amazon recently released a whole new bunch of Kindles. Of the new releases, one stands apart as something new for Amazon: The Kindle Colorsoft is the company's first attempt at a color e-ink display, and it replaces the long-forgotten Kindle Oasis as Amazon's new flagship e-reader device. At $280, it's certainly an expensive piece of kit — especially if you consider the basic Kindle costs almost a third of that. But it's quite simply the most advanced Kindle that Amazon has ever made.

So, does that mean you should buy it immediately? Absolutely not; I want you to buy something else instead.

Android is getting call scam detection and real-time app threat alerts
Private Space on Android 15 running on a Google Pixel 6a held in hand.

Google’s focus on Android safety and security has been pretty evident this year. From partial screen recording and private spaces to protection against juice jacking attacks, Android 15 has been quite a reassuring iteration.

Google is now injecting some more energy into that endeavor with a couple of new features that tackle the threat of scam calls and bad apps. These features are appearing first on Pixel smartphones, and will subsequently make their way to other Android phones.
