Monkey Man (2024)

Monkey Man | Official Trailer

Marking the directorial debut of Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, The Newsroom), the 2024 action flick Monkey Man has the actor playing Kid, a young man who witnessed the brutal death of his mother at the hands of a spiritual guru and corrupt cop, Rana (Sikander Kher). Now an adult working in an underground fight club in a monkey mask, Kid is still out for revenge on Rana.

He concocts a plan to get inside a luxury brothel he knows Rana frequents and take a menial job to get as close as he can to achieving his mission. But things don’t quite go as planned, and Kid ends up having a transformative experience that sets him on a path with a greater purpose.

The action thriller delivers yet another gripping performance from Patel, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in the 2016 drama Lion. “Dev Patel goes bananas with his behind-the-camera debut,” writes Decider’s John Serba in his review, “and the result is a bracing and effective action picture.”

Merry Little Batman (2023)

Merry Little Batman Trailer | DC

Grab the kids and watch this animated superhero action movie based on the iconic DC Comics character Batman (Luke Wilson), aka Bruce Wayne, and his son, Damian Wayne (Yonas Kibreab), aka Little Batman. Damian is at the center of the plot in Merry Little Batman\. He’s a young superhero who has to take the lead and stop the Joker from ruining Christmas in Gotham City. Why? Dear dad is away on another mission, so it’s up to his brave son to save the city from this evil villain.

Merry Little Batman is a wonderful Christmas movie that’s a departure from the usual rotation of movies you probably have running through the next few months. You’ll recognize some other familiar voices among the cast, including James Cromwell (Succession) as Alfred Pennyworth, David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as The Joker, and Brian George (The Big Bang Theory) as The Penguin.

Ride On (2023)

RIDE ON Trailer (2023) Jackie Chan

There’s a reason Jackie Chan has had such an enduring career that has spanned more than 60 years. At age 70, he is still going strong and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic martial artists in movie history. In this action comedy drama, he stars as Lao Luo, an old-school stunt performer who frequently works with his stunt horse, Red Hare.

Deformed at birth, Red Hare was saved by Lao from being put down, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Now with Lao’s life in shambles following an injury and bankruptcy, he finds himself fighting to keep the one true friend he has and to reconnect with his estranged daughter Xiao Bao (Liu Haocun).

In Mandarin with English subtitles, Ride On isn’t your usual Chan movie, but he still shows off his comedic chops and incredible fighting and stunt skills. Daniel M. Kimmel of North Shore Movies opines that the movie is a solid “tribute to the stuntman [Chan] was and those he’s worked with … an entertaining and heartfelt effort.” If you’re a fan of Chan’s work, you’ll delight in this movie. See him train a horse instead of a human before checking him out in his next project, Karate Kid: Legends.

Netflix is streaming the craziest action movie of 2024. Here’s why I loved it
A man floating in air kicks another man in the face in City Hunter.

This month seems to be the time to release action movies that color outside the lines. We've already had Dev Patel's Monkey Man, a messy, throw-everything-at-the-wall action movie that blends intricate fight sequences and on-the-nose social commentary in an entertaining package that will surely gain cult status in the near future. Just this weekend, Boy Kills World dished out loads of cartoon violence and over-the-top gore in a bid for John Wick-level fandom. Both movies bend or break the rules of reality to deliver quickly cut fight scenes that push the boundaries of the genre, all in an attempt to one-up the high standards set by the best movies in the Mission: Impossible and Fast and Furious franchises.

Yet the best of the April bunch is the one that has the lowest profile. City Hunter doesn't star anyone you'd recognize like It actor Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World and hasn't been backed by an extensive marketing campaign like Universal's Monkey Man. But the movie is a blast; it's like putting Pop Rocks in a can of Mountain Dew and chasing it down with a couple of Pixy Sticks. It's ludicrous, immature, and totally unrealistic. It's also my favorite action movie of 2024. Here's why you need to stream City Hunter pronto.
It's an adaptation of a massively popular franchise

Amazon wants everyone to ‘Prepare for Fallout’ on Prime Video in April
A man leans on a wooden beam in Fallout.

Getting the tone of Fallout right is the biggest challenge facing the upcoming live-action adaptation on Prime Video. The games have a very particular sense of humor without becoming a complete farce. However, someone in Amazon's marketing department is clearly familiar with the world of the games because the promo video for Amazon's Prepare for Fallout on Prime Video is hilarious, and it captures the essence of the franchise in ways that the previous trailers for the series haven't been able to.
