Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually (2003) Official Trailer - Colin Firth, Emma Thompson Movie HD

Whether you’re in the camp that believes Love Actually to be a Christmas movie or not, there’s no denying that it’s a rom-com, and one of the best of the last two decades at that. The ensemble cast and interweaving stories that touch on all types of love, not just romantic love, will leave you in tears, both of joy and sadness. It doesn’t matter how many times you watch the movie, it never gets old.

There are elements of humor, regret, sorrow, and sweetness as you follow stories of an aging pop star who recognizes what’s truly important, a young British man exploring casual love in America, unrequited love, the strains of marriage, the pull of familial obligation, and budding young love.

Love Actually has serious talent among its cast, including rising stars at the time who have now become household names. It’s one of those movies worth watching every year, especially around the holidays.

The Rebound (2009)

A young man pours wine for a woman as she looks on smiling in The Rebound.
The Film Department

The Rebound didn’t get a fair shake when it first debuted, largely because the distributor shut down before release, resulting in the rom-com becoming a direct-to-DVD film. But the combination of Catherine Zeta-Jones and rom-com pro Justin Bartha, along with the interesting story, will have you curious to see how it all plays out.

Zeta-Jones is Sandy, a recently divorced mother of two who meets and befriends a young and aimless barista named Aram (Bartha) ,who is going through a separation of his own. The pair begin a whirlwind romance, despite their 15-year age difference. But the fact that they’re in very different places in their lives, coming from completely different generations, stands in the way of long-term happiness. But should it? If you’re looking for a fun, yet predictable rom-com you haven’t watched yet, The Rebound is a solid choice.

A Christmas Spark (2022)

A woman on a motorcycle wearing a helmet looks over a handsome man with grey hair in A Christmas Spark.
Lifetime

Don’t discount A Christmas Spark: It’s more than just a cheesy Lifetime Christmas movie. The rom-com has a tremendous cast led by Jane Seymour, and it’s a refreshing take on love for mature adults. Molly (Seymour) is recently widowed and decides to visit her daughter for Christmas. Looking for something to fill her time, she signs up to direct the town’s Christmas pageant, using her experience as a former drama teacher. There, she meets and falls for Hank (Joe Lando), who just so happens to be the town’s most sought-after eligible bachelor.

While Molly has always been tied down, Hank is a free spirit who helps her let loose and reignite her passion for life after loss. It’s her moment to shine, and she gets the opportunity to do so in more ways than one. Produced by a team that includes singer Toni Braxton, A Christmas Spark is a wonderful feel-good story that hits all the right notes this month.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (November 8-10)
A man and a woman talk in Let Them All Talk.

It's the second week of November, which is still too late for scary movies (sorry, Heretic) and too soon for holiday movies. Sure, you could stream the latest season of The Diplomat, but what if you're carving a solid movie that lasts around two hours?

Fortunately, Max has plenty of them, with thousands of titles from every genre imaginable. We've selected a great drama from 2024, a dark satire from the 1990s, and a recent movie that takes place on a famous boat. And no, it's not Titanic.

The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more
The cast of Bad Sisters.

Ideally, this weekend would have seen the streaming premiere of Yellowstone season 5, part 2 on Peacock, but apparently next-day streaming is not in the cards for the most popular show on cable TV ... unless you live in Canada or elsewhere outside of the U.S. That means it's a slow weekend in the streaming verse, and things are going to get a lot slower as 2024 runs out the clock during the next two months.

Fortunately, on Sunday, November 10, the season finale of HBO and Max's The Penguin will wrap up its story and set the stage for The Batman Part II. The only other noteworthy show is the season 2 premiere of Arcane on Saturday, November 9. Netflix is dropping Arcane season 2 over a three-week period, which is a departure from the streamer's normal release schedule. But it should keep fans of the series on their toes with some cliffhanger moments ahead.

Superheroes and horror flicks will dominate theaters this weekend. At home, the world is your oyster, as every genre will be at your disposal.
