Robert A. Heinlein’s 1966 novel The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever written, and now it’s getting the big-screen treatment, courtesy X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer.
Arrow and Green Lantern writer Marc Guggenheim will pen the screenplay for an adaptation of Heinlein’s award-winning story about a Lunar colony’s revolution against the nations of Earth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is expected to have its title changed to Uprising, however, rather than use the title of the book.
This isn’t the first attempt at adapting The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, as two earlier big-screen treatments of the novel stalled before the rights reverted back to Heinlein’s estate. Previous films based on Heinlein’s novels have included 1997’s Starship Troopers (loosely adapted from Heinlein’s novel of the same name), 1994’s The Puppet Masters, and the recent film Predestination, based on Heinlein’s story All You Zombies.
Production on Uprising will need to wait until after Singer finishes work on X-Men: Apocalypse, the follow-up to last year’s well-received X-Men: Days of Future Past. The director’s involvement with Uprising could mean he’ll part ways with the X-Men franchise after Apocalypse, as he’s hinted in the past that the upcoming film will conclude what he views as a trilogy that began with 2011’s X-Men: First Class.
There’s no release date or production schedule announced yet for Uprising.
