Positive buzz has been building for Gotham, the upcoming television series that unfolds in DC Comics’ famous city well before Bruce Wayne donned Batman’s cape and cowl, and the latest trailer for the series only adds to the hype surrounding the program.
Set in slo-mo to the tune of Aloe Blacc’s “Ticking Bomb,” the trailer features Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) visiting a crime scene in a dark alley, accompanied by Detective Harvey Bullow (Donal Logue), his partner on the Gotham City Police Department. As the pair approach the scene, various supporting characters can be seen in the crowd, including the man who will become The Penguin, Oswald Cobblepott (Robin Lord Taylor), as well as the future Catwoman, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), and the villain that will eventually call himself The Riddler, Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith). New character Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), an up-and-coming figure in the Gotham underworld, also appears in the crowd.
“This is my city,” says Jim Gordon over the footage. “I’ve come back because I care what’s happening to it. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who cares. This town is at a tipping point: crime, corruption ooze on every corner. Someone needs to take a stand against it all — and that is where we come in.”
The series follows Detective Jim Gordon as he returns to Gotham and attempts to navigate the murky waters of a city on the verge of collapsing under the immense weight of its criminal element. While working to clean up the city, his life also becomes intertwined with that of an orphaned boy destined to become the city’s greatest protector.
Gotham premieres September 22 on FOX, and also stars Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Zabryna Guevara as GCPD Captain Sarah Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean (Jim Gordon’s wife), David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne, and Victoria Cartagena as GCPD Detective Renee Montoya.
