After an impressive run of films, the X-Men franchise has begun showing signs of wear in recent years with movies that have underperformed at the box office or simply failed to capture the sort of positive buzz that keeps a series thriving. There have been exceptions — particularly with this year’s “R”-rated action comedy Deadpool — but even that character hasn’t been able to avoid trouble behind the scenes.

So what’s next for Deadpool and the X-Men franchise? Quite a lot, according to a recent profile of studio 20th Century Fox that focuses on its plans for its mutant superheroes — plans that include a new team that will be introduced in Deadpool 3.

Although a third Deadpool movie has yet to be officially announced, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the studio is already planning the follow-up to the upcoming Deadpool sequel. The third film will reportedly feature the debut of X-Force, the mutant team introduced in a 1991 issue of New Mutants that has included Deadpool, Wolverine, and many former X-Men among its members at various points.

Of course, the studio will need to shore up its creative team for Deadpool 2 before it can move on to the third chapter of the character’s solo series, and that includes finding a new director for the film. After Deadpool director Tim Miller exited the project unexpectedly last month, John Wick director David Leitch reportedly entered talks to helm the film. He has yet to be officially confirmed as the director on the movie.

If X-Force does get to make its debut down the road, it will be the team’s first big-screen appearance in the franchise. The creation of Deadpool co-creators Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, X-Force was portrayed as a more aggressive mutant team than the X-Men, willing to take an offensive approach to threats to mutantkind. The team has been rumored to be getting its own movie for years now, and the report suggests that it could now very well be folded into Deadpool 3 initially.

As for the rest of the franchise, the report indicates that the studio is pushing “the reset button” on the X-Men series, with franchise writer and producer Simon Kinberg working on a movie script that will kick off a new set of films. It’s unknown whether James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence — the stars of the most recent series of X-Men films — will return for future installments, as the trio’s original contracts were finished with the release of this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

The next movie in the franchise that will hit theaters is the final installment of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine solo series, Logan, which premieres March 3, 2017.

Someone remade Deadpool & Wolverine in Fortnite, and it’s awesome
Deadpool battles in a forest in Fortnite.

It's safe to say that a lot of people have watched Deadpool & Wolverine by now. The MCU movie, which pairs The Merc with a Mouth with the X-Man Wolverine in a wacky multiverse adventure, has grossed over $900 million as of August 8, and will easily pass the $1 billion mark after this weekend.

It's hard for a movie these days to make that much money, which is a testament to just how much people like this film. Aside from the much-publicized popcorn buckets that are already scarce collectibles and viral Tweets and video clips about its many surprise cameos, Deadpool & Wolverine's impressive popularity has already crossed over into the world of gaming.

Forget Deadpool & Wolverine — this is the best X-Men adaptation of them all
Two men stand close to each other in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The X-Men movie universe has officially expired. Cause of death: corporate merger. Fans have probably pre-mourned the first superhero franchise of the modern era, which has been on life support for years, as Disney cleared its slate of leftovers — like Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants — in preparation for an inevitable Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot.

But anyone who’s been waiting on a more ceremonious farewell to the Fox years can find it in the closing credits of Deadpool & Wolverine, when this gleefully irreverent movie suddenly gets all mushy about the films it's been mocking. The only thing ironic about the closing montage of valedictory behind-the-scenes footage is the use of Green Day’s eternally misunderstood Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) to set the sentimental tone.

Forget Logan — this 2013 superhero film is the best X-Men movie of them all. Here’s why
Wolverine flexes his muscles in The Wolverine.

Critics and X-Men fans alike heaped praise upon Logan, the R-rated 2017 superhero drama that was intended as Hugh Jackman’s goodbye to the character that made him a global superstar. With Logan, Jackman, writers Scott Frank and David Green, and director James Mangold delivered a somber and adult story about aging, death, despair, and legacy that feels less like a comic book action film and more like a dark revisionist Western.
However, the cultural narrative that Logan was some sort of saving throw -- a correction or apology for the loathed X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- ignores the middle chapter in the character’s trilogy of solo films, 2013’s The Wolverine. A product of many of the same creative minds as Logan, The Wolverine gets only a fraction of the praise and is the most underappreciated chapter in the X-Men movie series. It may not have been a massive superhero “event,” but that’s exactly what makes it great.

The Wolverine feels like a solid comics story
