Who won big at the Emmys and who got shafted?

The 2016 Emmy Awards aired last night, and host Jimmy Kimmel was a breath of fresh air, delivering some great laughs and setting the tone for the evening. And while the awards offered its share of “more of the same” in many categories, there were also some real breakthroughs and some pleasant surprises

Which nominees came out on top? HBO’s Veep and Game of Thrones killed it, as did FX’s The People vs. O.J. Simpson. On the streaming side, Netflix surprisingly struck out in many of its nominated categories.

This year's Primetime Emmy Awards have officially ended, and they were like no other. While Jimmy Kimmel, who last hosted back in 2016, was a familiar face, the setting was not. For the first time, the show took place virtually, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite everyone participating from different locations, the 72nd annual ceremonies was still focused on celebrating the best in television and recognizing actors and the people behind series for their impressive work.

Season 3 of HBO's Westworld took the hit series in plenty of new directions, both philosophically and geographically, leaving the titular theme park behind for a story arc set in the outside world that explored humanity's dominion over its creations.

The third season also earned the show its third Primetime Emmy Award nomination for visual effects -- one of 11 categories the season was nominated in this year. Visual effects studio Pixomondo shared in that nomination each of the last two years for its work on the series, which concluded its eight-episode third season in May and has already been renewed for a fourth season.
