In July, Max is moving forward from past hits like The Last of Us and controversial shows like The Idol to a period where original documentaries and political thrillers dominate the schedule.

Max’s July 2023 schedule promises to keep the HBO tradition of quality programming alive with a bevy of new releases that include the limited series Full Circle from director Steven Soderbergh. In addition, there will be the anticipated debut of the original documentary Golden Boy, a Project Greenlight reboot, something called Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, and Shark Week. Here’s what coming to Max in July 2023:

After The Penguin, this iconic Batman villain should get their own HBO show
The Penguin burns something in The Penguin.

HBO's new hit series The Penguin may have seemed like an odd choice for a comic book series at first. But following the show's extraordinary success as a thrilling crime drama in Gotham City, it is clear that Matt Revees' The Batman has laid the foundation for even more successful spinoffs set in the world of Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight. There are already reports that Barry Keoghan's Joker will get his own spinoff show set between The Batman Part II and Part III. (These reports have since been debunked by James Gunn himself.)

The Batman gave a terrific introduction to Colin Farrell's villainous character, who was expanded in The Penguin along with the fabled Falcone/Maroni crime war referenced in the former. It's clear DC has only scratched the surface of its new vision of Gotham and that there are other stories just waiting to be told on HBO. For many reasons, the best next option is a solo series centered around Zoë Kravitz's Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

The best sci-fi movies on Max right now
John Boyega and his gang in Attack the Block.

Sci-fi movies are a weak point for Max, largely because the streamer rarely adds to the titles that it already has. However, December is a nice change of pace with three recent additions: Attack the Block, Jupiter Ascending, and The Return of Doctor X. That last title is an 85-year-old movie, while the others are more recent releases.

Since most of Max's 20th Century Studios sci-fi movies are gone, fans may have to settle for the Jurassic Park films instead of Alien and its sequels. Thankfully, the recently premiered animated film Watchmen Chapter 1 works well as both a superhero story and a sci-fi tale. You can find the rest of our selections for the best sci-fi movies on Max below.
