Everything coming to Netflix in May 2023

After decades of mailing DVDs and revolutionizing the entertainment industry, Netflix continues to be the premier destination for streaming content. With recent hit shows like Wednesday, The Diplomat, and The Night Agent, plus blockbuster movies like The Gray Man and the Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front, Netflix still dominates the streaming landscape like no other.

That domination is likely to continue with Netflix’s May 2023 programming schedule, which includes the debut of the action movie The Mother with Jennifer Lopez and the arrival of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first TV series, Fubar. In addition, a Bridgerton spinoff, Queen Charlotte, will premiere as well as the hit Sony dramedy A Man Called Otto with Tom Hanks. There’s a lot for everyone, so we’ve highlighted our selections in bold below.

What brings you joy in work? What gives you purpose? What makes a good job…good? These are the questions at the center of Working: What We Do All Day, a compelling documentary series that explores the ways in which we find meaning in our work and how our experiences and struggles connect us on a human level. Narrated by President Barack Obama, who makes appearances alongside everyday people in their homes and places of work, the series follows individuals at all levels of the workforce — from service jobs all the way up to the C-suite — across the industries of home care, tech, and hospitality.

As a college student, Obama was inspired by Studs Terkel’s 1974 book Working, which revolutionized the conversation around work by asking ordinary people what they did all day. The series brings this idea into the modern world by offering intimate, behind-the-scenes portraits of people’s lives and giving viewers a new understanding of and appreciation for the jobs they do each day. Executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama and directed by Caroline Suh, Working: What We Do All Day is a Higher Ground and Concordia Studio Production.

Everything coming to Netflix in August 2024
A girl checkers her phone in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

August is typically a quiet month for the entertainment industry, but Netflix didn't get that memo. The popular streamer has stacked its schedule for the month with enough original new series, returning fan favorites, and compelling licensed content to keep you glued to your television.

One big highlight that streams right at the beginning of the month is A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, a BBC co-production that stars Wednesday's Emma Myers. Other notable premieres include Lee Daniels' new film The Deliverance, the teen comedy Incoming, and new seasons of Emily in Paris and The Umbrella Academy.

House of the Dragon season 2: Everything we know so far
A man preps for battle in House of the Dragon season 2.

Long-ime Game of Thrones fans are eagerly awaiting the return of House of the Dragon. This prequel series became a genuine phenomenon in its first season, which told the story of the friendship between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower as it soured into what would eventually become an all-out civil war.
HBO renewed the show for a second season almost as soon as the first season began airing, and we already know plenty about where the show will be headed when it returns.
This post does not contain any spoilers for the show's second season, but it is informed by Fire & Blood, the Targaryen history by George R.R. Martin that the series is adapted from. The show will continue to focus on the conflict between Rhaenyra and her younger half-brother Aegon as they battle for control of the Iron Throne.

What will happen in season 2 of House of the Dragon?
House Of The Dragon | Official Teaser | HBO Max
Without delving into spoilers, the second season of the show is expected to pick up soon after the first season left off. Fans of the show will likely recall that that season ended with Aemond Targaryen's dragon inadvertently attacking and killing Rhaenyra's son Lucerys and his dragon. Lucerys's death is what ultimately brings what had been a simmering conflict closer to a boil, leading to a much greater level of death and destruction.
Based on the latest trailer for the new season, the story will show more of Westeros than what we saw in the previous season. Shots of characters standing atop the Wall and sailing across the seas hint that the Dance of the Dragons will impact all of Westeros as both sides gather allies from all across the Seven Kingdoms. Likewise, the trailer features shots of characters flying dragons, riding horses, and marching with entire armies, teasing a much more action-packed season that harks back to Game of Thrones at its most exciting.
We also know, thanks to an interview with one of the show's writers, that a moment known to fans as Blood and Cheese will be included on the show. The exact details of that moment are best left to the imagination. But suffice it to say that it's a moment likely to leave many fans talking.
