Extended trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy introduces more characters and new footage

It’s only a matter of weeks now before Guardians of the Galaxy makes Marvel’s “cinematic universe” truly universal with a cosmic adventure that pits a ragtag group of misfits and criminals against a villain that threatens the fate of everyone in the galaxy. For those who just can’t get enough early footage from the film, Marvel has released a new, extended trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy that offers a few more scenes, a lot more comedy, and even the first look at another character appearing in the film.

Blending together extra footage from some of the previously released scenes — like the “That’s not a real laugh!” sequence with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) — and a few altogether new clips featuring Ronan (Lee Pace), Gamora (Karen Gillan), and various other characters, the extended trailer actually does a nice job of offering up something new for fans who crave more without giving too much away for the more spoiler-sensitive fans. One particularly noteworthy element is the debut of The Walking Dead actor Michael Rooker as the blue-skinned alien Yondu around the 2:22 mark in the preview.

The new trailer also offers more of the great music that has been bringing the film some attention. The full soundtrack for the film went online last week, and it’s worth a listen for any fans of classic pop music from the ’80s and earlier.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters August 1 and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro.

Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 the best James Gunn movie ever?

James Gunn's career in cinema began in 1997 when he wrote the low-budget Troma Studios film Tromeo and Juliet. His subsequent movie scripts included a lesser-known superhero flick, The Specials, two live-action Scooby-Doo movies, and a remake of Dawn of the Dead. In 2006, Gunn was finally given a chance to direct his first movie, Slither, before making his mark on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy eight years later.

Late last year, Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios, and he is slated to direct Superman: Legacy. That's why Gunn's newest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is his final Marvel Studios movie. It's also the perfect occasion to look back at Gunn's filmography to date and list them in descending order based on their Rotten Tomatoes rankings.

It's the end of an era. Nearly a decade ago, Guardians of the Galaxy changed the MCU forever and introduced the world to a band of a-holes who, over the course of several movies, grew into a family. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Mantis, and Nebula have become sentimental favorites to MCU fans and helped usher in the cosmic side of Marvel that is the dominant playground for Phase 5.

When things come to an end, however, that usually means someone bites the big one. And certainly, in the press and trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there's a strong indication that death will visit one or more of our beloved Guardians. Zoe Saldana has openly spoken about being done with playing Gamora, one of the MCU's best female characters, after this movie; ditto Dave Bautista with Drax. And one of the key promo images for the movie has Nebula carrying Star-Lord's limp body. Did I also mention one of the key plot points involves Rocket being mortally wounded?

When a certain type of movie ends, audiences know it's not time to leave the theaters just yet. It's now a ritual for audiences to linger after the end credits roll for superhero movies and even "regular" movies like John Wick: Chapter 4, as they know there will be one or two (or in some cases, more) "stingers" that tease about the endless sequels and cinematic universes that dominate the pop culture landscape. Marvel perfected the art of the end credits sequence in The Avengers, with the reveal of Thanos as the architect behind a grand scheme to collect all the Infinity Stones.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is certain to continue this tradition when it's released on May 4. The last film in James Gunn's trilogy, Vol. 3 has fans curious about what will happen to the beloved team in what appears to be their final adventure together.
