The nominations for the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced, and as is often the case with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s award show, the list of nominees is an eclectic mix of projects and performers that span a wide range of what the movie and television industries offered up over the last 12 months.

The nominations were announced Monday, December 12, by actors Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick, and the list of nominees includes some surprising films and actors who aren’t likely to get as much attention from the Golden Globes’ more prestigious (or possibly elitist, depending on who you ask) counterpart, The Academy Awards, but are deserving of recognition all the same.

Chief among those unlikely honorees was the “R”-rated superhero comedy Deadpool, which earned not one, but two nominations.

Unlike the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards honor both film and television projects,  and their casts and creative teams. The Golden Globes also differentiate based on genre, with nominations divided between drama and “musical or comedy” categories. The winners of each category are determined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon, and it will also honor eight-time Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep with the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony will air live on NBC from 8-11 p.m. ET on January 8, 2017.

2020 Golden Globe nominations were big for Netflix, Apple TV+
Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in their living room in Marriage Story.

The nominees for the 77th annual Golden Globes are here. Organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA), the Golden Globes honor both television and film and are traditionally seen as one of the more laidback ceremonies of the Hollywood awards season. The show is also considered by some to be an indicator of which films will eventually earn Oscar recognition. If that consideration holds true this year, then the Academy Awards may just be in for a streaming service invasion.

The show will air on NBC on Sunday, January 2020 and be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
Netflix rules the nominations
Despite its notoriety for television streaming, Netflix, made a surprisingly big splash in the feature film nominations this year. Noah Baumbach's Adam Driver- and Scarlett Johansson-starring Marriage Story earned six nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Screenplay. It was joined in that category by Martin Scorsese's heralded The Irishman, which received five total nominations, and Fernando Meirelles' The Two Popes, which received four. Yes, 60% of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category is comprised of Netflix films. Plus, Eddie Murphy vehicle, Dolemite is My Name earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy.

5 reasons why the original Gladiator is still worth watching
Russell Crowe points a sword as a man stands behind him with one.

Twenty-four years ago, the world witnessed Russell Crowe's Maximus Decimus Meridius become a hero in the arena in Gladiator. After being sold into slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator, rising the ranks in the arena and setting his sights on avenging the deaths of his family. Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator was the second-highest-grossing film of 2000 and won five Oscars, including Best Picture.

This November, Scott will revisit these legendary warriors in Ancient Rome for Gladiator II. The sequel follows Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), the son of Connie Nielsen's Lucilla. After the Roman army invades his home, Lucius is sold into slavery and trains to fight as a gladiator. The first trailer for Gladiator II looks spectacular. Only time will tell if Gladiator II lives up to the hype. What isn't up for debate is the legacy of Gladiator, an action-packed drama that still holds up to this day.
Action scenes remain exhilarating
Gladiator - Colosseum Battle
Scott establishes that Gladiator will be an epic action film from the opening battle, with Crowe leading the way. It's an appetizer for the gladiatorial fights to follow. The first gladiator fight features Maximus, Juba (Djimon Hounsou), and the rest of Proximo's slaves chained to a partner as they take on several masked fighters. During this fight, the violence is on full display, with unrelenting violence and gruesome kills. These are fights to the death and therefore must be brutal.
Once Maximus enters the Colosseum, the action intensifies, beginning with the magnificent reenactment of the Battle of Zama. Despite being outmatched, Maximus leads the gladiators to victory. While his showdown against Commodus puts the cherry on top of a great movie, Maximus' fight against Tigris of Gaul (Sven-Ole Thorsen) is the superior one-on-one fight. Maximus even avoids being eaten by a tiger in this confrontation. Maximus, do not worry. We are entertained.
Revenge is a dish that audiences still eat up

Miles Morales soars through the air in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

What is going on with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse? Since Sony removed the animated film from its release calendar, Beyond the Spider-Verse has experienced multiple setbacks.

The latest troublesome report comes from Brandon Davis’ Phase Hero podcast, which claims that an early version of Beyond the Spider-Verse was completely scrapped after the release of 2023's Across the Spider-Verse. The creative team on Beyond the Spider-Verse had to rewrite the entire script for Beyond, even though several animated reels had already been created.
