3 great Netflix horror movies you should watch on New Year’s Day

Horror is traditionally associated with Halloween, but why shouldn’t be watched on other holidays? Some horror movies are great to watch on certain holidays. For instance, Black Christmas is a great slasher to watch on Christmas Eve. Ditto the It movies on the Fourth of July and, now, thanks to Eli Roth, Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving.

New Year’s Eve movies don’t have a set genre, although it’s popular to watch rom-coms or comedies to ring in the new year. Digital Trends wants to buck that trend by recommending three horror movies on Netflix that will scare you into 2024.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

Ty Simpkins stands in a red doorway in Insidious: The Red Door.
Sony Pictures / Sony

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Insidious franchise, so I was surprised by how much I liked the fifth and latest one, the underrated Insidious: The Red Door. The 2023 movie reunites the Lambert family from the first two films: father Josh, oldest son Dalton, and mother Renai. Josh and Renai have divorced since Insidious Chapter 2 and Dalton, now entering college, is estranged from his dad. But demons, both literal and metaphorical, awaken to bring them all together again, as the franchise’s iconic villain, the Lipstick-Face Demon, returns to once again claim Dalton’s body and his unique ability to astral project to an astral plane known as The Further.

Yes, it’s a bit silly, but Insidious: The Red Door is also very scary. The director, Patrick Wilson (who also stars as Josh), knows how to stage a scene and milk it for all of its horror, and there’s one sequence that has Josh stuck in an MRI machine that still gives me the creeps. It’s an ideal way to ring in the new year by watching people try to get over their past traumas by destroying some demons.

The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers Official Trailer #1 - Liv Tyler Movie (2008) HD

When it was first released in 2008, The Strangers wasn’t seen as anything more than just another horror movie. In the years since, the movie’s reputation has grown, and with good reason–it’s one of the most terrifying horror movies of the last 20 years. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as a couple fighting for their lives against three masked attackers while at their vacation home.

Featuring three creepy antagonists, two great performances from Tyler and Speedman, and an ending that will haunt you for some time, The Strangers is effective because it knows that there’s nothing scarier than the unknown. Nothing is explained, and the violence is random and shocking. Since 2024 will see the release of three (!) new Strangers films, now’s a good time to check out or rewatch the original.

Lights Out (2016)

Warner Bros. Pictures

If you liked the 2023 movie The Boogeyman, you should check out Lights Out. This traditional horror movie is peppered with effective jump scares and a truly terrifying premise. The 2016 movie uses a hefty handful of genre tropes, but it uses them in a slick manner. Lights Out focuses on Rebecca, who used to be terrorized by an invisible entity when the lights went out at night when she was a young girl. Now an adult, her little brother Martin is experiencing the same unexplained events. Both siblings have to survive the invisible entity, which can only survive in total darkness.

It’s a simple setup, but it’s also an effective one, and Lights Out is a good horror movie that does its one job: to scare the heck out of you really well. It’s not the greatest movie ever made, but it beats watching a sickly sweet rom-com as the ball drops in Time Square on New Year’s Eve.

3 rom-coms on Netflix you need to watch in March 2025
Two people stand in a field and walk.

Valentine's Day might have passed, but romance is still a major part of Netflix's movie selection. The romance genre page is home to some of the most popular romance movies of the last 30 years. Notting Hill, Miss Congeniality, Wedding Crashers, and Love, Actually are available to stream on Netflix.
This month, we have three rom-coms to watch on Netflix. Two of them are set in Italy, including the latest Netflix original, La Dolce Villa. The other Italian-set rom-com features an actress for one of the streamer's hit shows of 2024. Our third pick is a fantasy rom-com about childhood best friends who grow apart in their mid-20s.

Afterlife of the Party (2021)

Afterlife of the Party is more comedy than romance. It's more of a platonic rom-com where friendship is the relationship at play. Regardless, there are still plenty of laughs with supernatural twists. Cassie (Victoria Justice) and Lisa (Midori Francis) have been best friends since childhood. As they reach their mid-20s, the two girls are complete opposites. Cassie is a social butterfly, while Lisa remains an introvert.
After a night of drinking leads to an argument, a hungover Cassie trips on her walk to the bathroom and hits her head on the toilet. Cassie dies, but she can't get into heaven just yet. She must help three people, including Lisa, in five days or be forced to live in a version of hell called "below." Think of Afterlife of the Party as Ghost without the pottery scene and the murder.

3 underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025
Several workers with bags standing in a remote location looking scared in Severance.

What makes a movie underrated? It might be that critics have panned the film even though it has earned massive box office success and positive reception from audiences. Perhaps it’s the other way around, and critics love it, but audiences fail to see what’s so special. Some underrated movies are fantastic but simply didn’t get the attention they deserved and have slipped into the deep depths of streaming services, only to be unearthed by those who dare to find them.
The three underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025 fall into varying categories that qualify the movies as underrated. One broke records, yet critics refuse to give it two thumbs up. Another shares its name with one of the hottest shows streaming right now.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Trailer

Even before it premiered, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was getting a lot of flak for the choice of Chris Pratt as the voice of the titular character. Following the debut of this adventure comedy film in theaters, critics still weren’t convinced that it was a hit. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie delighted fans and proved naysayers wrong.
The film explored an interesting dynamic whereby Bowser (Jack Black) was a softie with a deep love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Of course, this brought us that lovely gem of a Peaches song that kids sang for weeks after. The movie's mixed reviews are no match for its tremendous box office success, not to mention the fact that it broke a Guinness World Record to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game and became the first movie based on a video game to gross more than $1 billion. It’s incredible to learn that with all these huge numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie only has a 59% Rotten Tomatoes critics score.
