If you always wanted to know where most of the funniest comedians from the 1990s got their starts, you are about to get the option to binge on the show that launched many of them. Today, Kevin Hart, in partnership with Lionsgate, announced his Laugh Out Loud comedy subscription video streaming service will launch in August and will be the first place you can stream all seven seasons of the legendary HBO show Def Comedy Jam.

The Russell Simmons-produced show’s initial run from 1992-1997 could rival Saturday Night Live in terms of iconic comedians that got their early starts on the standup comedy show. The list includes Dave Chappelle, Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence, Queen Latifah, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx, to name a few. The show went off the air in 1997 before being revived for one season on HBO in 2006.

Hart got one of his first televised roles during the 2006 Def Comedy Jam revival. Up until Hart’s streaming service, the only way to revisit the vulgar yet brilliant comedy show was to buy the DVD box sets or illegally stream disparate standup acts on YouTube.

Being able to binge on Def Comedy Jam is just part of the scripted and unscripted programming slate Hart has prepared for his all-comedy streaming service. According to the press release announcing the launch of Laugh Out Loud, the streaming service will have seven original programs.

The first Laugh Out Loud original episode you can watch in advance of the streaming service’s launch in August is the hidden-camera Kevin Hart: Lyft Legend. In Lyft Legend, Hart goes undercover in disguises as a Lyft driver while he picks people up. The series will consist of six episodes and run weekly on Laugh Out Loud, but the first episode featuring Joel McHale is available on Laugh Out Loud’s official Facebook account. R&B sensation Trey Songz will appear in a future episode.

Hart is often known as the hardest working man in comedy, and he does not seem to be slowing down. In addition to launching a streaming service, Hart will executive produce and guest star in the upcoming Showtime comedy The Studio. He also will reportedly star in a remake of the 1988 comedy The Great Outdoors.

The Laugh Out Loud streaming app will be a free download for iOS and Android devices when it launches on August 3. Users can opt in to paying $3 per month to watch all the content without ads.

Me Time review: Netflix’s latest comedy falls apart
Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg wear matching tracksuits in Netflix's Me Time.

There is a scene early on in Me Time, the new Netflix comedy from writer-director John Hamburg, that feels like a perfect encapsulation of the film itself. It goes a little like this: After making a series of impulsive decisions, a formerly adventurous stay-at-home dad (played by Kevin Hart) finds himself in the desert with only a bucket for a bathroom. When he goes to use the bucket for the first time, he suddenly finds himself alone in a stand-off with a hungry mountain lion.

The sequence’s premise is effectively simple, and Kevin Hart is more than capable of elevating the absurdity of the situation by leaning into his character’s understandable fear. The scene, therefore, shouldn’t have any problem delivering the laughs that it promises. Unfortunately, the mountain lion that Hart’s Sonny is forced to face off against just so happens to have been brought to life with some of the worst CGI you'll likely see in any film this year.

Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg find some Me Time in new trailer
Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Hart in Me Time.

Everyone makes sacrifices when they start a family. Ideally, we're supposed to become fully realized adults who put the needs of our children ahead of our own while preparing them for the world. But in the first trailer for Netflix's Me Time, Kevin Hart's Sonny has taken it to an extreme. This stay-at-home Mr. Mom is so devoted to his kids and his family that he's lost touch with who he was before. But that's about to change when Sonny reunites with his best friend, Huck, played by Mark Wahlberg.

Director Patrick Hughes on The Man from Toronto and working with Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart and Patrick Hughes stand next to each other in The Man from Toronto.

Some of the best action comedies are ones that are rooted in mistaken identities. From Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest to Shawn Levy's Date Night, these films put their protagonists through hell all because of a simple misunderstanding of who they are and, more importantly, what they do.

Netflix's The Man from Toronto continues this tradition with frazzled husband Kevin Hart being mistaken for a cool and calculated hitman played by Woody Harrelson. In a conversation with Digital Trends, the film's director, Patrick Hughes, discusses working with the two disparate stars and his belief that all buddy action comedies are essentially platonic love stories.
