The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

The Haunting of Hill House
Netflix

Before he left for Amazon, Mike Flanagan was “Mr. Horror” for Netflix. Flanagan created five shows for Netflix from 2018 to 2023. His first, The Haunting of Hill House, is arguably his best. Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House is split between two timelines. In 1992, Hugh (Timothy Hutton and Henry Thomas) and Olivia Crain (Carla Gugino) and their five children move into a mansion, Hill House, to fix it and flip it for profit.

During their stay, the children notice something strange within Hill House’s walls. It’s a paranormal phenomenon that haunts the family and eventually leads to tragedy. Twenty-six years later, the Crains are forced to confront their fears and revisit what they saw at Hill House. This series is a shining example of Flanagan’s expertise in atmospheric horror.

The story begins in November 1983 with the kidnapping of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in Hawkins, Indiana. No man or woman kidnapped Will; instead, it was a creature from an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.

Will’s three buddies — Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) — team up with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a psychokinetic girl training in a laboratory, to find their missing friend. By trying to find Will, the group inadvertently creates a link between Hawkins and the Upside Down, inviting a sea of abnormal creatures to wreak havoc on the residents. If you appreciate the Amblin movies from the 1980s, then you’ll love Stranger Things.
