For many, the original Conan the Barbarian is a classic. A powerful score accentuated Arnold in all his glory, while the screenplay by John Milius and Oliver Stone was the R-rated epic that would stand the test of time. It was an unapologetic action movie in a time when action movies were king. Conan the Destroyer? Not so much, but that’s beside the point.
The first was (and still is) a classic, and when the news of a reboot emerged, it was met with what could generously be called skepticism. But it wasn’t exactly surprising to hear of the reboot in a modern Hollywood that will reboot and remake anything. And besides, if this film isn’t a hit, give it 10 years and they may just reboot it again anyway.
The new movie will be directed by Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th, Pathfinder), and will star Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate Atlantis) as Conan. Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang and Ron Perlman also appear.
In this iteration, when his father is murdered and his village destroyed, a young Conan heads out into the world and scrapes by as a thief, a pirate and a warrior. Along the way he discovers the man responsible for his village’s destruction, Khalar Zym (Lang), and he puts foot to ass in his pursuit of vengeance.
The trailer, however, shows none of that. The recently released clip is actually just a teaser, so expect a full trailer to debut in the next few months at the latest.
Look for Conan the Barbarian to hit theaters in 3D, of course, on August 19.
