Nickelodeon isn’t just for today’s kids. The network has confirmed that it will launch The Splat a programming block that will speak to the children of the ’90s by bringing back favorites of that era, such as Kenan & Kel, Hey Dude, Rugrats, and more. Set to launch on Teen Nick on Oct. 5, The Splat will span the late-night to overnight hours, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET.
Other programs to be featured on the The Splat include All That, Clarissa Explains It All, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Salute Your Shorts, The Wild Thornberrys, Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko’s Modern Life. If you grew up in the ’90s, the list should be more than a little familiar to you. Fear not if you see an old favorite missing, though: Nickelodeon has plans to roll out still more classic shows in the future.
The Splat will also feature old programming stunts each month, including a sweepstakes that Nickelodeon and Toys “R” Us used to hold in the ’90s. Viewers will also be able to catch familiar promotions and interstitials, with the “Doo-Wop Dinosaurs” and “Opera Lady” making their return. It’ll be quite the throwback, and the nostalgia factor may help The Splat compete with Time Warner’s Adult Swim, which is on the air at the same time.
“We designed ‘The Splat’ with fans and their requests in mind, which means we’re bringing together these beloved series and a high level of digital engagement to give fans a retro media experience they can’t get anywhere else,” said Cyma Zarghami, president of Viacom Kids and Family Group, in a statement.
The fun won’t be limited to TV, either. Fans will also be able to engage on social media, keep tabs on The Splat‘s YouTube channel, and even use a new emoji keyboard and more on the fan-driven website. It sounds like it’ll be all that.
