Martin Scorsese's long-awaited 'Silence' finally has its first trailer

Silence Official Trailer (2016) - Paramount Pictures
As with any movie directed by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Silence, his adaptation of the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. The first trailer for the film was released this week by Paramount Pictures, and it certainly promises to be a tense experience for both its characters and the audience.

The film casts The Amazing Spider-Man and Hacksaw Ridge actor Andrew Garfield and Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Girls actor Adam Driver as a pair of young Portuguese Jesuit priests in the 17th century who travel to Japan to locate their fellow priest and mentor and continue his work spreading Christianity in the foreign land.

Along with Garfield and Driver, the film also stars Liam Neeson (Taken) as the young priests’ mentor and the subject of their quest. The cast also includes Tadanobu Asano (Thor), Issey Ogata (The Sun), Ciaran Hinds (Bleed For This), Yosuke Kubozuka (Go), and Yoshi Oida (The Pillow Book).

The film is directed by Scorsese from a script penned by himself and Jay Cocks, who also co-wrote the screenplay for Gangs of New York with Scorsese. It will be the second adaptation of the novel after Masahiro Shinoda brought it to the big screen in 1971 as a film of the same name.

Silence has been a passion project for Scorsese since the ’90s, but the director was forced to back-burner the film after he was unable to secure financing for it as the follow-up to his 2004 film The Aviator. When the movie was first announced, Gael García Bernal, Benicio Del Toro, and Daniel Day-Lewis were cast as the young priests and their mentor, respectively, but all three actors were forced to depart the project as it stalled out in development. Garfield, Driver, and Neeson later replaced them.

A joint production of Paramount Pictures, Fabrica de Cine, and Ai Films, Silence will have a limited theatrical release on December 23, followed by a wide release in January 2017.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (November 2024)
Ivana Baquero in Pan's Labyrinth.

Freevee may be going away, but Amazon Prime Video has always had a deeper library of hit movies to draw upon than its "free" streaming service. Even in slow weeks like this one, Prime Video still has movies like Pan's Labyrinth and Galaxy Quest to fall back on. Those are two very different films, but both are fantastic examples of their respective fantasy and sci-fi/comedy genres.

Prime Video is pretty action-heavy this month, with Mark Wahlberg's Infinite inexplicably hanging on near the top of the movie charts alongside another Prime Video original, Canary Black. Romance lovers may find more to like in My Old Ass or Silver Linings Playbook. Regardless of your tastes, this list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now has something waiting for you.

The first six Fast and Furious films have also arrived on Netflix, which should make action lovers very happy. For this week, we're putting the spotlight on Fast Five because it's one of the best in the series, and it also featured the first face-off between Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Netflix is also currently having a lot of success with the action rom-com The Lost City, as well as other recent arrivals, including Oblivion and Kung Fu Panda 4. You can find those films and more in our complete roundup of the best movies on Netflix right now.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in November 2024
The cast of Cobra Kai.

For a streamer that made its name on binge-watching, Netflix has really embraced the split-season model this year. That's why we have fresh episodes of Arcane this weekend, as well as new episodes of Cobra Kai. That Karate Kid sequel series has proven to be so popular that it's bound to hit No. 1 on the list of the most popular shows on Netflix now that Cobra Kai season 6, part 2 has arrived.

Netflix has also just added A.P. Bio, a sitcom that previously ran on NBC and Peacock. This is a show that never achieved the popularity it needed to last longer than four seasons. But if any streamer can revive interest in this series, it's Netflix.
