Universal Pictures has released the first, full trailer for the film ahead of its June 2017 release.
The Mummy casts Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond actress Sofia Boutella as an ancient Egyptian queen who wreaks havoc on the modern era after she’s brought back from the dead. From what the preview seems to indicate, Cruise and his co-star, Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), are apparently the only people who believe enough in the threat she poses to try and stand in her way.
The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who served as a writer and producer on the first two installments of the rebooted Star Trek franchise, as well as on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It will be Kurtzman’s second directorial feature, and is intended to kick off both a new Mummy franchise, as well as tie in to a new cinematic universe based on the classic Universal monsters.
Along with The Mummy, Universal has plans to develop new films based on The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing.
Along with Cruise and Boutella, the film’s cast also includes Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson), and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The script for The Mummy was written by The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts.
The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017.
