The Mummy casts Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond actress Sofia Boutella as an ancient Egyptian queen who wreaks havoc on the modern era after she’s brought back from the dead. From what the preview seems to indicate, Cruise and his co-star, Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), are apparently the only people who believe enough in the threat she poses to try and stand in her way.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who served as a writer and producer on the first two installments of the rebooted Star Trek franchise, as well as on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It will be Kurtzman’s second directorial feature, and is intended to kick off both a new Mummy franchise, as well as tie in to a new cinematic universe based on the classic Universal monsters.

Along with The Mummy, Universal has plans to develop new films based on The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing.

Along with Cruise and Boutella, the film’s cast also includes Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson), and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The script for The Mummy was written by The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts.

The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017.

This 2017 Tom Cruise thriller is the most popular movie on Netflix. Here’s why you should watch it
Tom Cruise pointing at a plane in American Made.

As an aging movie star who is driven to entertain his audience, Tom Cruise has committed himself to more and more daring stunts with each movie he puts out. In each of these movies, Cruise seems to be playing a version of himself, a harried man who is also confident that he's the only one who can keep it all going.

There was a time, though, when Cruise was willing to deliver much more full-bodied performances in everything from Born on the Fourth of July to Magnolia. Even more recently, though, Cruise has found vehicles that allow him to give a more complete performance, and one of those movies is now trending on Netflix. American Made was released in 2017, and its success on Netflix is suggestive of what the movie does well. Here are three reasons you should check it out:
It's a grounded crime thriller

Why the first Mission: Impossible movie is still the best one
A man looks out from the shadows in Mission: Impossible.

Everyone loves the Mission: Impossible movies. There are a variety of reasons why: they offer old-fashioned cinematic thrills; they are a form of escapism akin to the James Bond movies, but tougher and more American; they feature one of the last truly great movie stars, Tom Cruise. Ever since the fourth installment, Ghost Protocol, resurrected the genre from pop culture oblivion, the conventional wisdom is that the modern M: I films just keep getting better and better, and are the series' best entries.

Well, nuts to that. I'm not going to defend the much-maligned M: I 2, which doesn't really deserve reconsideration (seriously, what's with all those doves?), but the original Mission: Impossible, in my eyes, is perfection, and hasn't been topped by any other M: I film ... or any action movie, for that matter. The peak of '90s Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking, Mission: Impossible delivers two cinematic giants, Cruise and director Brian De Palma, at the height of their powers, and is perhaps the most fun mainstream movie Hollywood ever produced. Here are just a few reasons why the original M: I still holds up today.

All the Mission: Impossible movies, ranked from worst to best
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt hanging above the floor in Mission: Impossible.

In 1996, Tom Cruise starred in two movies. One of those movies, Jerry Maguire, earned the actor his second Oscar nomination. The other film was Mission: Impossible, a film that drastically changed the course of his career. As Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible elevated Cruise into a bonafide action star, as he started his transition from dramatic and comedic movies to more action and sci-fi films.

Thirty years later, the Mission: Impossible franchise remains one of the most consistent series in Hollywood. Mission: Impossible continues to raise the stakes with each entry as Cruise risks his life with each death-defying stunt, all in the name of entertainment. Before Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, we have a task for you to complete. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to read the Mission: Impossible movie rankings below and discover which one is the best in the series. Cue the theme song.
