Mulder and Scully are back: The X-Files revival scores solid premiere ratings

The two-part premiere of The X-Files revival proved that fans still care about Mulder and Scully. Airing on both Sunday and Monday night, the rebirth of the ’90s sci-fi series starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson pulled in strong ratings, according to recently released numbers.

Sunday’s episode had the benefit of a massive lead-in given that it aired directly after the NFC championship game. (Some 45.7 million viewers watched the Carolina Panthers defeat the Arizona Cardinals, reports Deadline.) Of course, The X-Files wasn’t able to retain the whole audience, but it did make an impression; time-adjusted Live + same day ratings show that the Sunday episode garnered 16.2 million viewers. Among adults 18-49, The X-Files earned an impressive 6.1 rating.

A boost from the NFL post-season matchup wasn’t the only reason The X-Files fared so well, though. Monday night’s data shows that a lead-in wasn’t necessary to attract viewers, with 9.7 million people tuning in for the second part of the premiere, according to Entertainment Weekly. That episode gained a 3.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demo, easily topping CBS’ Supergirl and ABC’s The Bachelor, which scored ratings of 1.8 and 2.3, respectively.

The X-Files was Monday night’s highest-rated broadcast program and served as an ideal lead-in for Lucifer, a new supernatural drama on Fox. The latter was the second-highest rated show of the night, pulling in a 2.4 rating and 7.1 million viewers. Clearly, Fox execs played their cards right.

Robbie Amell, who plays Agent Miller, celebrated the premiere’s ratings on Twitter Tuesday, thanking those who watched and promising that what’s to come in the next four episodes will be equally good.

Fortunately for fans, these X-Files ratings could mean more episodes of that series down the road. Creator Chris Carter revealed at the recent Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena that he expected the studio to want more episodes if the event series performed well, according to an EW report at the time.

It sounds like we’ll need them, too, because Carter also shared that the current six-episode order ends on a massive cliffhanger.

The X-Files airs on Mondays at 8:00 pm ET.

Jack Black as Satan Claus in Dear Santa.

There are no rules that say you have to watch a Christmas movie on Christmas. But it is absolutely the best time to watch Christmas movies, or at least Christmas-adjacent films. These stories don't tend to play the same way in March as they do in December. Plus, Christmas films have the added benefit of being family-friendly selections ... for the most part. Some Christmas action movies are probably best left for older viewers.

This year's selections for the 10 best movies to watch on Christmas are available on most of the major streamers, and include new films mixed with some older titles. Not every selection below is strictly Christmas-related, but they all share the Christmas spirit in one way or another.

The Godfather Part II at 50: Is this movie the greatest sequel ever made?
Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II.

Sequels are a way of life in Hollywood, and they've been around in some fashion since the dawn of cinema. But in 1974, it just wasn't common for an Oscar-winner for Best Picture to have a sequel two years later that won the same prize ... and more. Fifty years ago this month, The Godfather Part II changed the game for the industry and arguably surpassed The Godfather itself.

While many of The Godfather Part II's contemporary films -- like The Towering Inferno -- have faded from pop culture, this movie continues to influence every crime epic that came after it. It set the bar so high for a sequel that not even The Godfather Part III could come anywhere close to this film's heights. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather Part II, we'll examine what makes the film resonate and determine whether it's the greatest sequel ever made.
The dual narratives are both compelling

5 great classic movies to watch on Christmas
A man talks to a cop in It's a Wonderful LIfe.

The Christmas season is filled with tradition. Some people decorate their tree together, others bake something or other. For some, though, the most meaningful part of the season is gathering around to watch a great movie. And no, we don't mean Wicked.

Classic movies sometimes get a bad rap, in part because they're old, and sensibilities were a little different when they were made. Even so, some of the best holiday movies ever made can most neatly be described as "classics," and we're recommending five of the very best for you to enjoy this holiday season.
