It may be a little early for the holidays, but someone at Warner Bros. Discovery is acting like a Grinch when it comes to Max. Only 23 movies debuted on Max at the beginning of November, which is truly a stingy rollout for the pricey streamer. If the lineup was any thinner, we’d think it was Disney+.
But just because the selection on Max is lacking this month, it doesn’t mean there aren’t some great viewing options. That’s why we’ve put together this list of the three underrated movies on Max that you need to watch in November. Between two very good dramas and a great action thriller, you’ll find these hidden gems waiting for you this month.
We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
Another Earth (2011)
While the premise of Another Earth makes it a sci-fi story, it’s a drama at heart. Brit Marling co-wrote the film and stars as Rhoda Williams, a young woman whose life is upended by a car accident that lands her in prison. That’s because Rhoda’s actions had unintended consequences that left John Burroughs (William Mapother) and his family dead.
Four years later, Rhoda is released from prison just as public fascination with Earth 2 hits an all-time high. And we don’t mean the Earth 2 TV series. Instead, it’s a duplicate world in our solar system that may represent an alternate place where Rhoda didn’t destroy her life or John’s. Rhoda also wants to make amends with John, but she can’t be a part of his life without withholding the truth about who she is and what she did to him.

Janet Planet (2023)
The mother and daughter bond in Janet Planet is a little stronger than usual. Janet (Julianne Nicholson) is very close to her daughter, Lacy (Zoe Ziegler). So much so that Janet is willing to break up with her significant other largely at Lacy’s behest.
There is some tension at home, and not always between Janet and Lacy. Janet may love her daughter, but she also wants happiness in a romantic relationship outside of the bond she shares with her child. Finding the right balance between her needs and her daughter’s needs proves to be difficult for Janet. As for Lacy, she’s got some growing up to do herself.

Unstoppable (2010)
What is it with Denzel Washington (Gladiator 2) and trains? This isn’t a sequel to The Taking of Pelham 123, but it might as well be The Taking of Pelham 1234 since Washington reunited with director Tony Scott in Unstoppable. At the start of the film, a train accidentally leaves the yard at full power without anyone on board. And what was first an annoyance soon threatens to become an ecological nightmare if the train’s cargo spills in a populated area.
Railroad engineer Frank Barnes (Washington) and train conductor Will Colson (Chris Pine) may be the only men who can prevent this disaster from reaching people. However, their boss, Oscar Galvin (Kevin Dunn), undermines their efforts in order to preserve the company’s resources. And only Fuller Yard’s yardmaster, Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson), has Frank and Will’s backs as they embark on a dangerous gambit to halt the train.
