Star Trek franchise star Chris Pine will take on the role of Steve Trevor in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, according to a new, unconfirmed casting report.

While his attachment to the film is still unofficial, The Wrap reports that Pine has closed a deal to play the DC Comics super-heroine’s longstanding romantic interest in the 2017 film. Pine, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek franchise, reportedly signed a multi-movie deal with Warner Bros. that could have him return in sequels and other tie-in projects throughout the studio’s burgeoning DC superhero cinematic universe.

First introduced in the same 1942 issue of All Star Comics where Wonder Woman made her debut, Steve Trevor was originally an American soldier whose plane crashed on the isolated island that was home to Wonder Woman and her sisters. His encounter with the mysterious warrior matriarchy that called the island home exposed their civilization to the world. He would later go on to become Wonder Woman’s lover and — in some versions of the DC Comics continuity — her husband.

If the report proves true, Pine will star in the film opposite Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, who was cast as the famous superhero back in December 2013. Gadot will make her debut as Wonder Woman in next year’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice before her solo film hits theaters. She’s expected to feature prominently in the upcoming Justice League team-up films, as well, with Justice League Part One scheduled to premiere in late 2017.

Directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster) and based on a script penned by Ice Age: Continental Drift and Pan screenwriter Jason Fuchs, Wonder Woman is currently slated to hit theaters June 23, 2017. It will be preceded in the DC Comics cinematic universe by Batman V. Superman on March 25, 2016, and followed by Justice League Part One on November 10, 2017, which is expected to bring together all of the superheroes introduced up to that point.

Not too long ago, 2020 was shaping up to be a big year for movies. A lot can change in a few months, though.

After shutting their doors for several months due to the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic, theaters are expected to begin gradually reopening in the weeks to come, with industry-leading chain AMC Theatres planning to have all its locations back in business at some point in July. Although questions remain about how safely this can be done, there's also plenty of uncertainty about what will be on theaters' screens if and when this happens.
