South Korean mega-corp, Samsung, is in talks to purchase Tidal, the boutique streaming service owned by Jay-Z, according to the New York Post.

The two companies have reportedly held on-and-off talks over Tidal’s 16 month lifetime, a period during which Samsung has been extremely involved with a number of Tidal artists. Most recently, the electronics company spent $28 million to sponsor Rihanna’s new album and tour.

But Samsung is not the only company interested in a possible Tidal takeover. Both Google and Spotify have reportedly gazed longingly at the struggling music service, likely looking to fold its roster of artists into their growing portfolios, thus fortifying their positions in the streaming war.

The Samsung news comes along with a rumor that the company is planning something big in the media realm, and coincides with its major sponsorship of this year’s Oscar ceremony

“Samsung is re-engaging; they are working on something really big, and they’re keeping it very quiet in case it leaks,” said a source to the New York Post.

Tidal has been marred by a number of controversies in its short life. The company accidentally released Rihanna’s Anti days early, and played a significant role in the extremely confusing release cycle of Kanye West’s latest album The Life of Pablo. Plus, Tidal’s corporate leadership don’t seem extremely excited to stick around; The company is now on its third CEO in its short life. Sources have also indicated that the company is having trouble paying its royalty checks on time.

For Samsung, acquiring an already-running service with some notoriety could be cheaper than creating its own market; While Tidal was valued at $250 million dollars by executives at the time of its launch, it is now worth about $100 million. Current owners include Rihanna, Madonna, and Nicki Minaj, among other celebrity pop stars.

When exactly the acquisition would happen remains to be seen but, with bills mounting, it will likely be sooner than later.

Samsung’s Smart Monitor M8 brings wireless casting and game streaming
Samsung's latest smart monitor comes with a webcam for video conferencing.

Samsung is expanding its smart monitor lineup at CES 2022 with the Smart Monitor M8 (M80B), a sleek new 32-inch 4K display with some impressive wireless capabilities and smart TV functionality.

Initially, Samsung's smart displays were marketed as an easy way to wirelessly connect to a compatible Samsung smartphone -- like the flagship Galaxy S21 series and the rumored forthcoming S22 models -- for a desktop-like DeX user experience. But in the era of remote and hybrid work, these wireless monitors have a different goal: To bring a clutter-free, cable-free setup to desks and home offices.

One UI 4 and Android 12.

Samsung has made Android 12 and One UI 4 available to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 just weeks after releasing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S21 family. The update has dropped first in the company's native Korea, but will likely be making a worldwide rollout in the next week or so.

As with the S21's release that came last month, One UI 4 and Android 12 bring enhanced customization and security features to Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 owners. These include a new feature that themes your phone with the color of your wallpaper, customizable emoji, and more. Privacy wise, OneUI 4 owners will now see indicators when their cameras or microphones are in use, preventing apps from accessing those clandestinely.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE render in purple.

Shortly after live images of the Galaxy S22 Ultra emerged, semireliable leaker Jon Prosser shared dates of when he expected the Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE) and Samsung Galaxy S22 series to launch. Prosser expects the S21 to launch in January, with the S22 following shortly after at a later event in February.

According to Prosser, Samsung is planning two Unpacked events to launch these new phones. The S21 FE will launch on January 4, just after the new year, he claims. This would come after a months-long delay triggered by the global chip shortage and a refocusing by the company on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3. There will be no pre-order period; instead, the phone will go on sale a week later on January 11, 2022. The S22 will arrive with more fanfare, inclusing an announcement on February 8, 2022. There will be a pre-order period of 10 days, leading up to an availability date of February 18.
