Apple customers spent record amount on apps on New Year’s Day

With the ongoing pandemic keeping many people home during the holidays, owners of Apple devices opened their wallets and spent a record $540 million on the company’s App Store on New Year’s Day alone.

App Store sales of digital goods and services reached a whopping $1.8 billion in the weeklong period between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the tech giant revealed on Wednesday, adding that the sales were driven mainly by spending on games.

“As the world navigated an ever-changing new normal of virtual learning, grocery deliveries, and drive-by birthday celebrations, customers relied on Apple services in new ways, turning to expertly curated apps, news, music, podcasts, TV shows, movies, and more to stay entertained, informed, connected, and fit,” Apple said in a message announcing the record spending.

The company said that videoconferencing service Zoom and on-demand video subscription service Disney+ were among the most downloaded apps of 2020, with both services picking up customers as the pandemic changed people’s daily habits.

Popular game downloads included titles such as Among Us and Roblox, according to Apple.

“In a year like none other, apps have become more essential than ever. Developers found new ways to keep people connected, help them learn and work from home, stay fit and well, and provide much-needed entertainment,” the iPhone maker said, adding that developers selling through the App Store have now earned more than $200 billion since the online store’s launch in 2008.

Many of the apps will have landed on Apple’s newest iPhone 12 handset, which launched toward the end of last year. All eyes are now on January 27, when Apple’s latest set of financial results — covering September through December 2020 — will reveal how well the new phone has been selling.

The first iOS 18 update fixes a major bug with Apple’s Passwords app
An iPhone showing the Apple Password app.

Apple has finally introduced iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1, the first software updates for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Although this iOS 18.1, which will brng the Apple Intelligence update that many have been waiting for, it’s important nonetheless.

The iOS 18.0.1 update fixes a pesky bug in Apple’s new Password app. As the iOS 18.0.1 change notes explain, there was an issue where the Password app could inadvertently use VoiceOver to read out passwords. No doubt, this is a bug no one wants to see, and now it’s squashed.

Why I spent a ridiculous amount of money on my next Apple Watch
A render of the Slate titanium Apple Watch Series 10.

I’ve spent quite a lot of money on an Apple Watch to prove myself wrong. When Apple ditched the stainless steel model in favor of a new titanium model with a polished finish and sapphire crystal, plus a beautifully delicate new watch face, its intentions in my mind were clear: This was an Apple Watch for those who truly wanted something more luxurious and more special than the aluminum or the old stainless steel version.

But I’m not convinced an Apple Watch can ever be luxurious or even that special, no matter what it’s made from. So, I spent $800 on an Apple Watch Series 10 to find out.

Vitals is one of the best Apple Watch apps I’ve used in years
A widget of the Vitals app in watchOS 11 on the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

A little over two months ago, Apple held its WWDC 2024 conference and unveiled a lot of new software features. There was plenty to sink your teeth into, but my favorite announcement of the show was watchOS 11.

Why? Because watchOS 11 adds features I've been hoping to see on the Apple Watch for ages -- such as the ability to pause activity rings and showing you more robust training/exercise data. It also adds the new Vitals app. I've been using Vitals on my Apple Watch Ultra 2 for a couple of weeks now, and it's everything I had hoped the app would be.
