Apple has updated the “Remembering Steve” page of its website to show messages from fans paying tribute to the late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died last week at the age of 56.
“Over a million people from all over the world have shared their memories, thoughts, and feelings about Steve,” reads a message at the top of the page. “One thing they all have in common — from personal friends to colleagues to owners of Apple products — is how they’ve been touched by his passion and creativity.”
Anyone who would like to post a message honoring Jobs may submit their own thoughts, stories and memories to rememberingsteve@apple.com. The page is updated continuously, with a never-ending stream of messages flowing down the page. New messages are presumably vetted by Apple staffers before appearing on the page to weed-out profanity, haters and trolls.
Each message includes its own headline. Those currently appearing on the site, at the time of this writing, include titles like “Grief,” “A true genius” and “We are fortunate to have lived when Steve Jobs did.”
“My condolences to Steve Jobs’ family, friends, and all those who knew and had the pleasure to work with him,” wrote one fan named Aaron. “As I write this from my iPhone surrounded by an apartment filled with Apple devices I can’t help but recognize just a few of his many achievements. It is a shame that he will not be able to see the future that is, in no small part, possible because of him.”
In addition to the website update, Apple will reportedly close down a number of its retail store locations for three hours today, from 9am until 12pm PDT. It is not yet clear which locations will close and which will remain open. According to Ars Technica, at least the largest Apple Stores will shut their doors as a moment of silence for Jobs. These reports still remain in rumor status, however, which seems to us fitting.
