Android’s new ‘SMS of Death’ exploit can crash your phone without you doing anything

A malicious text message can disrupt calls and leave an Android phone stuck in a reboot loop, without the owner knowing what happened.

A security researcher has uncovered a serious vulnerability in Android that allows an attacker to remotely crash a smartphone using a specially crafted text message. Dubbed “SMS of Death,” the flaw can disrupt cellular services, disconnect ongoing calls, and even leave a phone stuck in a reboot loop. The troubling part is that the recipient doesn’t have to interact with it at all.

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-58882, was discovered by security researcher Mark Blaszczyk, who first notified Google about it in May. On October 29, he published his findings alongside a working demonstration, after successfully reproducing the attack on Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Google has already developed a fix, but its availability across Android devices is another matter.

Should every Android user be worried?

The pool of affected devices is not limited to a particular Android brand, as what matters here is the version of Android running on the phone and whether it has received the necessary security patch. Blaszczyk says the fix has already reached Android 14 through 17 as part of Google’s October 2026 security updates. However, the company didn’t mention the vulnerability in its October security bulletin.

The researcher emphasized that older Android phones running Android 12 and 13 haven’t received the fix, which leaves those without ongoing security support exposed to the attack. For everyone else, checking the security patch level and installing the latest available Android update is the best precaution. The information can usually be found in the Settings menu, although the exact location differs depending on the manufacturer.

It’s also worth clarifying that this is a denial-of-service vulnerability, and not an exploit designed to steal passwords or personal information. So far, there is no confirmed evidence of widespread attacks targeting Android users.

How can a text message crash an Android phone?

The issue at heart is how Android processes WAP Push messages, which are handled by the operating system without appearing in the regular SMS inbox. Ordinarily, the user doesn’t have to do anything with these messages. But Blaszczyk found that a malformed message can trigger an error in Android’s telephony framework, bringing down the process responsible for cellular connectivity.

In this case, the crash can disconnect an ongoing phone call, including one made to emergency services. Moreover, if the carrier attempts to deliver the same message again, the phone can end up crashing repeatedly. During testing, around 20 malicious messages were enough to leave a smartphone stuck in a reboot loop.

A factory reset isn’t the only way to recover the device. However, the alternative involves using Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to clear the offending messages, which isn’t something an average smartphone user would be familiar with.

Motorola Signature 27 specifications revealed in a new hands-on video, shows off a Tandem OLED 12,000-nit display
Motorola just turned the brightness dial up to ridiculous with the Signature 27
Motorola Signature 27

Motorola seems to have decided that playing it safe is terribly overrated. Its upcoming Signature 27 flagship is shaping up to be a serious piece of hardware, with a reported 12,000-nit Tandem OLED display, a 200-megapixel periscope camera, and enough memory to make most everyday users feel slightly spoiled. The phone is set to launch on November 5, but a new hands-on video from YouTuber Danny Winget in collaboration with Motorola has already spilled several of its biggest secrets.

And there is quite a bit to get excited about. The Signature 27 could be Motorola's attempt to muscle its way back into the premium flagship conversation, rather than simply showing up with another phone that looks good on a spec sheet.

WhatsApp group chats get permanent message pins, private Status updates, and more
Finding important messages in your busiest WhatsApp groups should now become a little less frustrating.
WhatsApp on iPhone

WhatsApp is introducing four new features to group conversations, aimed at making it easier for users to manage important messages and catch up on conversations they may have missed. The latest additions include Group Status, permanent message pinning, a dedicated filter for mentions and replies, and the ability to share recent message history even after someone has joined a group.

The updates address a common problem with busy WhatsApp groups, where conversations can accumulate hundreds of messages within a few hours, making it difficult to find important information or keep track of messages that actually need your attention.

Vivo X500 Pro hands-on: Hitting almost all the right notes for a perfect compact flagship

Vivo X500 Pro Hands-on and first impressions

Vivo's latest X500 lineup has three smartphones, and smack dab in the middle of the standard X500 and the extravagant X500 Pro Max is the small X500 Pro. It's a compact flagship that promises top-tier performance, capable cameras, and a massive battery with fast charging that keeps you away from a charger for as long as possible.

I've spent the past couple of days with it, and I have to say, this is one seriously well-rounded smartphone. I'll have to admit, I was quite skeptical when I looked at the spec sheet. The Pro branding comes with certain expectations, especially from a company that's been pushing smartphone photography as aggressively as Vivo. The Vivo X500 Pro loses the larger 200MP telephoto camera found on its Pro Max sibling, while OriginOS has never been my favorite Android skin.
